Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
FACTORY BUILDING, the so-called chocolate hall, built in 1919 in reinforced concrete to a design by Mart J. Stam and belonging to the Cacaofabriek Boon complex. The factory building, like 'De Arend', is a monolithic reinforced concrete structure with exposed skeleton. In structural terms, the skeleton of the chocolate hall is a step further developed than that of 'De Arend', which is still supported by beams.
Description
Longitudinal two-storey factory building on an approximately rectangular floor plan of approximately 48 by 24 metres, consisting of two storeys under a flat roof. The factory building is a monolithic reinforced concrete structure with exposed skeleton. The hall has mushroom floors: beamless floors on columns that fan out at the head to an eight-sided wide plate and merge seamlessly with the floor. Both storeys of the building have five rows of nine columns with a bay width of 6 by 6 metres. Thus there are 21 octagonal columns standing freely in the space; the others form the exposed facade columns. The long facades have eight bays, the end facades four. The bays are subdivided by three narrow rows of concrete mullions each. As with 'De Arend', multi-pane wooden windows are located in the upper part of these fields, and in the lower part of these fields vertical brickwork in red brick is visible. In some fields one of the narrow concrete mullions has been omitted to make room for double doors and loading doors on the upper floor, above which a concrete hoist beam with rounded head projects from both long facades. The top of the facades has all around a rearward-sloping parapet wall formed by a continuation of the mentioned columns and intermediate mullions with vertical brickwork in red brick placed between them. At the base of the parapet wall, the sloping concrete sections end in a rounded cantilever.
Valuation
The well-preserved two-storey factory building, the former chocolate hall from 1919, is of general importance for cultural, architectural and industrial-historical value as an early and well-designed example of concrete skeleton construction in the Netherlands designed by Mart J. Stam in expressionistic style with Art Deco influences, and because of the presence of mushroom floors which are of innovative importance for the development of concrete skeleton construction. The building has ensemble value in relation to the four-storey factory building 'De Arend' which also belongs to the Cacaofabriek Boon complex.
