Inleiding

Introduction

Freestanding symmetrical FACTORY BUILDING named 'De Arend' built in 1916 in reinforced concrete designed by Mart J. Stam, forming part of the Cacaofabriek Boon complex.

Description

The four-storey factory building (approximately 17.90 metres above NAP) is built on a T-shaped ground plan. This ground plan is formed by the rectangular base of the four-storey high-rise with roof storey and the smaller - equally tall - extension of the staircase tower at the rear. Of the four storeys, the second is higher than the others. The building is executed as monolithic construction of reinforced concrete, cast in situ as one complete unit, whereby the concrete skeleton structure is clearly legible: ten facade columns per storey and two freestanding octagonal interior columns. The interior columns have chamfered side arms to support the floor beams. The front facade (S) like the rear facade is three bays wide and both side facades are two bays wide. The large openings between the exposed facade columns and floor edges are subdivided by two narrow concrete mullions and one narrow concrete transom. Above this transom are windows, below this transom are breastworks of vertically laid red brick visible. With the exception of the central bay in front and rear facades, each bay has a cross window with fanlight, flanked by narrow side lights. All windows are of wood with small glazing bars. The central bay has in each storey a double loading door with windows, fanlight and side lights as the aforementioned windows. Through the higher second storey, the unmarked - slightly projecting - column shafts and the vertical brickwork, the whole gives a strong vertical effect. The facades are finished with a crisp cornice. The factory building has a broken hipped roof in reinforced concrete with small rectangular flat parallel to the front facade. Internally the roof has broken roof truss structures which also support the water reservoir placed at the ridge. The roof has a pronounced break line because the gently sloping hips slightly overhang. To improve the waterproofing of the concrete roof, a red exterior layer of tiles was applied, which was later replaced by the current covering. Both narrow sides of the flat have a superstructure in reinforced concrete and brick, with in relief a stylized representation of an eagle. Between both superstructures is still an iron paling present to which the text 'Cacao Pette' was previously attached. The hipped roof has large concrete roof dormers on both sides with the same broken roof shape as the main roof. Centrally above the front facade is a similarly shaped roof dormer, here projecting beyond the facade and resting on stepped cantilevers. This roof dormer served as a hoist. From here the cacao bales were hoisted inside by means of a winch. The staircase at the rear is one bay wide and deep. The offset floor levels cause a stepped facade arrangement, detailed as aforementioned. The staircase has an equal gutter height as the main building block and likewise a broken hipped roof with roof dormer in reinforced concrete, which connects to the main roof with a lower ridge height. All facade columns have at the top for decoration a brick relief in the form of a stylized bee queen with wave motif.

Valuation

The well-preserved factory building 'De Arend' from 1916 is of general interest due to its cultural, architectural and industrial historical value as a well-designed, early and rich example of concrete skeleton construction in the Netherlands designed by Mart J. Stam in expressionist style with Art Deco influences. The factory building has ensemble value in relation to the two-storey chocolate hall from 1919 which also belongs to the Boon factory complex, and has, due to its urban planning location and appearance, important situational value.
