The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

On the boundary with the municipality of Oploo, St.Anthonis and Ledeacker, in the Defence Canal lies a concrete weir and distribution work (S11). This belongs to the original design of the Defence Canal and dates from 1939. By means of the distribution work, the height of the water level in the Defence Canal could be regulated: excess water was and is discharged in an easterly direction towards the Diversion Canal and ultimately, via the Molenbeek, discharged into the Meuse. The distribution work is defended by the S-casemate K59.

Description.

The distribution work consists of two weirs: on the northern side in the Defence Canal stands a standard concrete weir as described in the complex description. It is important that the original toothed slide at the top, including part of the original hand-operated moving installation (on the western side), is still present. The concrete weir floor and walls are also still in place. On the eastern side is a smaller, fixed weir, which forms part of the concrete weir wall. Excess water flows through this weir via the Diversion Canal to the Meuse. The slide in the weir is no longer present.

Valuation.

The distribution work is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a special expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and building-historical significance because of the special use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in adapting water management for military purposes. It is also of significance for the typological development of various defensive objects and structures with regard to national land defence.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of the land defence (the entirety of positions on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel area, which as a military landscape is of cultural-historical significance. The anti-tank ditch has a special historic-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions of the area. This integration also gives the complex considerable experiential value.

Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the intactness of the entire complex. As a large-scale military complex and a reminder of a large-scale defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg, the entire position is rare.
