Inleiding.
MUUR!, onderdeel van het complex O.L.V. van Zeven Smarten en gelegen in de thans gescheiden tuinen van de kerk en het voormalige Franciscanenklooster. Het betreft een restant van de ommuring van de kloostertuin van het oude Franciscanenklooster dat in 1925 afbrandde. De muur dateert in kern uit de bouwtijd van dit eerste klooster (ca. 1647) en is in de daaropvolgende eeuwen uitgebreid en gewijzigd. De muur bevat inscripties uit omstreeks 1800 van militairen die in de Franse tijd in het klooster waren gelegerd.
Omschrijving.
De (thans) U-vormige MUUR heeft een westzijde van zes traveeën langs de Leunseweg, een lange zuidzijde als afsluiting van de voormalige kloostertuin en een oostelijke zijde in de tuin van het klooster. De muur is opgetrokken in baksteen in kruisverband en wordt aan de bovenzijde afgesloten met een tandlijst en een iets uitkragende ezelsrugafdekking. De muur is ingedeeld in traveeën door steunberen. Het noordwestelijke uiteinde van de muur is recht afgewerkt. Aan de noordzijde is de oostelijke muur afgebrokkeld. Op sommige plaatsen draagt de muur inscripties uit omstreeks 1800. In de muur zijn op diverse plaatsen in de loop der jaren doorgangen gemaakt. De doorgangen zijn voornamelijk segmentboogvormig afgesloten en aan de binnenzijde gecementeerd.
Waardering.
De muur in de tuin van het voormalige Franciscanenklooster is van algemeen, cultuur-historisch en bouwhistorisch belang vanwege de ouderdom, de historische relatie met het oude afgebrande Minderbroederklooster van Venray, de visuele en historische ensemblewaarden met het huidige kloostergebouw en als markerende, geledende historische bouwsubstantie ter begrenzing van het kloosterterrein.

Description
Introduction.
Wall, component of the complex O.L.V. van Zeven Smarten and situated in the now separated gardens of the church and the former Franciscan cloister. This is a remnant of the enclosure wall of the cloister garden of the old Franciscan cloister which burned down in 1925. The wall dates in its core to the construction period of this first cloister (ca. 1647) and was expanded and modified in the subsequent centuries. The wall contains inscriptions from around 1800 by soldiers who were quartered in the cloister during the French period.
Description.
The (now) U-shaped wall has a western side of six bays along the Leunseweg, a long southern side as closure of the former cloister garden and an eastern side in the garden of the cloister. The wall is built in brick in cross bond and is closed at the top with a dentil course and a slightly projecting saddle coping. The wall is divided into bays by buttresses. The north-western end of the wall is finished straight. On the north side the eastern wall is crumbling. In some places the wall bears inscriptions from around 1800. Passages have been made in the wall at various points over the years. The passages are mostly closed off with segmental arch and are cemented on the inside.
Valuation.
The wall in the garden of the former Franciscan cloister is of general, cultural-historical and building-historical significance because of its age, the historical relationship with the old burned-down Minorite cloister of Venray, the visual and historical ensemble values with the present cloister building and as marking, articulating historical building fabric demarcating the cloister grounds.
