Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Eleven identical CHAPELS with WAY OF THE CROSS STATIONS built from 1912 and completed between 1914 and 1916 in a mixture of neo-gothic and art nouveau designed by architect and contractor A. Martens from Venray. The chapels are furnished with reliefs attributed to C. Walter from Trier. In 1990 the chapels were restored.
Description.
The eleven free-standing CHAPELS are identical in layout and built on a rectangular brick base. The façades are constructed in red brick in running bond with surrounds and copings in yellow or red moulded stone, and corner pieces and sills in artificial stone. The chapels are finished with gabled roofs. These roofs with ridge direction parallel to the side façades are covered with slate in Maas laying, with a row of Rens slates laid per roof slope. The ridge ends are topped with finials, currently covered with asphalt paper. On the front of the chapels a pointed arch opening above which a rendered gable top with cross. The façades have buttresses at the corners, and small pointed arch openings in the side façades. The rear façades of the chapels are articulated by a pointed arch-shaped blank. The chapel with the first station has an attached wooden shed under gabled roof.
The interior has a pointed arch-shaped barrel vault executed in façade brick. The chapels are furnished with floor tiles laid with black and white tiles and wrought and cast iron railwork with floral and fish-bladder motifs. Against each rear wall a wainscoting of white tiles with fine floral motifs finished with dark blue border tiles which in the southern chapels are topped by egg-and-dart mouldings. Each chapel contains above this wainscoting a pointed arch-shaped relief depicting the station within a surround of yellow moulded stone. The stations are respectively: 'Jesus is condemned to death on the cross', with inscription Mrs. The Widow J. Janssen-Janssens, Beesel 1912/'Jesus takes up the cross on his shoulders', with inscription The rectorship Oostum 1913/'First fall of Jesus beneath the cross', with inscription W. Weijs van Spraeland Oostrum 1913/'Jesus meets his sorrowful Mother'/'Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross', with inscription P. de Wit-Arts Helmond 1913/'Veronica wipes the face of Jesus', with inscription The church council of Oostrum 1913/'Jesus falls for the second time beneath the cross'/'Jesus admonishes the weeping women'/'Jesus falls for the third time beneath the cross'/'Jesus is stripped of his clothes and given vinegar and gall'/'Jesus is fastened to the cross'/'Jesus dies on the cross'/'The body of Jesus is taken down from the cross and laid in the lap of his Mother'/'Jesus is laid in the grave'. Below the reliefs are the station texts, presumably applied in stick-on letters during the 1990 restoration. The reliefs are furnished with full-length figures with an architectural depiction always in the background.
Valuation.
The STATION CHAPELS of Trans Cedron are of general public interest and are of cultural-historical value as a special expression of a cultural, spiritual and typological development. The architectural-historical value is determined by aesthetic qualities which are expressed among other things in the varied use of materials and ornamentation, such as the slate roofs and the wrought iron work. The chapels have art-historical value because of the reliefs present. The station chapels derive locational value from the functional-spatial relationship with the layout of the park.
