Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
A GROTTO with Calvary, Lamentation and Entombment built around 1909 is located in the southwestern corner of the Way of the Cross park at the transition from park to cemetery. The grotto is constructed in so-called 'rockwork', whereby the surface of a grotto is imitated in a mixture of slag stone and cement. The cement stone Pietà, the Entombment and the Grotto were executed according to the inscription by the firm P. Verbraak from Tilburg. The angel figures now in front of the grotto come from the Jerusalem cloister in Venray and were placed here in the second half of the twentieth century. The originally also cement stone crucifix was replaced in the second half of the twentieth century by a wooden example by the sculptor Piet van Dongen.
Description.
The GROTTO has a plan that is rounded at the rear and slightly splayed and irregular at the front, and is constructed in reinforced concrete finished at the top and front in fieldstone smeared with cement to create a rock surface. The grotto is accessible and descended via stairs on either side, with the descent on the north side provided with a simple handrail. On the grotto a base with a crucifix, the current cross and corpus of which date from the second half of the twentieth century. Centrally on the front of the grotto is a niche with the cement stone image of the Lamentation. The niche is closed off by wrought iron railwork with rosettes. In front of the grotto on either side are brick-built bases with angel figures from the Jerusalem cloister on top. On either side of the front of the grotto are narrow slot-shaped entrances to the vaulted interior space. The interior of the grotto is finished with stalactite effects and has in the rear wall a niche with a depiction of the Holy Sepulchre. The niche is closed off with small railwork. The depiction is lit by a light opening in the curved dome. In the grotto there are four niches at regular intervals with similar light openings.
Valuation.
The GROTTO in the Trans Cedron Way of the Cross park is of general public interest and is of cultural-historical value as part of the Way of the Cross park which is a special expression of a cultural, spiritual and typological development. The grotto has in particular typological value because of the presence of three events in a single depiction, which is characteristic of this type of devotional structures. The architectural-historical and art-historical values are determined by the use of materials and iconography, the coherence between the images and the architectural decoration. The grotto possesses ensemble values as an inseparable component of the Way of the Cross park.
