Omschrijving
Inleiding
In 1889 ontworpen KERKGEBOUW (Lucaskerk).

Description
Introduction
In 1889 a CHURCH BUILDING (Lucaskerk) was designed. The church was built on the grounds of the former country estate Veldwijk, which in 1884 was sold by owner M.J. Chevallier to the 'Association for Christian Care of the Mentally Ill and Nervous Sufferers in the Netherlands' and developed into the 'Psychiatric Hospital Veldwijk'. These grounds are located to the west of the village centre of Ermelo. The church was built as a hall church, but was soon enlarged with a broad transept, which gave the building a different character. This renovation took place somewhere in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The church forms a central point in the layout of the hospital pavilions. The building is surrounded by ample, park-like grounds and is clearly visible from all sides.
Description
The CHURCH was built as a hall church and in the first quarter of the twentieth century was enlarged with a broad transept, which partly determines the current appearance of the church. Through this extension, executed in the same architectural style, the ground plan of the church has acquired a cruciform character (Latin cross). The church has facades of cross bond brickwork, which are articulated horizontally by plastered horizontal decorative bands at various heights. The facade corners are dominated by pilaster-like thickened sections. At the window sills there is a horizontal, partially continuous, brick moulding with a dentil moulding directly below it. The brick plinth is finished with a roll moulding. The gutter mouldings are supported by consoles and mouldings executed in brick, including a dog-tooth moulding. The intersecting structural components (nave and transept) are covered by equally high gabled roofs, which are covered with dark red Romanesque pantiles. The north side of the church is dominated by an entrance risalit which continues into the belfry with a spire. The south side of the church has a somewhat lower constructed vestry chamber with a hipped roof with dark red Old Dutch pantiles.
The FRONT FACADE (north facade) is dominated by the entrance risalit with a double door within it featuring a semicircular fanlight and a partly plastered relieving arch. Above this is a round-arched window with iron tracery. This tracery consists of four paired round-arched elements and several circular motifs. The window is, like the other windows of the building, closed at the bottom with a sloping brick windowsill with a dentil moulding. Above the ridge of the gabled roof, the risalit becomes octagonal and is crowned there with a wooden belfry with an octagonal needle spire. This belfry with spire was once renewed. Below the belfry there is a bell on three sides. On either side of the entrance risalit there is a round-arched window with iron tracery as mentioned. The facades are finished with a plastered climbing frieze. Several ornamental wall anchors are placed in it.
The SIDE FACADES of the original nave section contain on each side three round-arched windows with tracery as mentioned. In the angle between transept and nave there is a diagonally placed, flat-roofed structure with two small round-arched windows and a blocked doorway. The north facade of the transept contains on each side of the nave one round-arched window as mentioned. The end facades (east and west) of the transept each contain one large round-arched window. The tracery is, however, executed here in brick and very richly detailed with, among other things, trefoil and fish-bladder motifs. The windows are filled with abstract stained glass. The facade tops have a plastered climbing frieze and are finished with a plastered drip moulding and an ornamental feature with trefoil motifs. Above the large round-arched window there is a small round-arched window on each side.
The gabled roof of the nave is closed at the REAR FACADE with a roof shield. Against the rear facade of the shallow extension of the nave is the lower vestry chamber with two round-arched windows and an entrance section. On either side of this chamber there are two round-arched windows with iron tracery as mentioned in the rear facade of the nave. The rear facades (south) of the transept each contain the same window. In the angles between nave and transept there are low extensions each with a double access door. The extensions have a roof covering executed in zinc. In the side facade of the extensions there are on each side two small round-arched windows.
The INTERIOR is strongly dominated by the spatial effect directed to the width of the transept. The nave is not only relatively shallow, some of its depth is lost due to the organ gallery. The cast-iron columns that support it are provided with decorative elements. The (unprotected) organ was renewed approximately 15 years ago. The roof truss structure has chalet-style influence in its descending parts. The stained-glass windows, which were restored a number of years ago, contribute greatly to the atmosphere of the space. This involves a geometric rhythm with simple colouring.
Valuation
CHURCH BUILDING from 1889, enlarged in the first quarter of the twentieth century.
- Of architectural-historical value as a good example of a Reformed church from 1889, in which the further development history has been harmoniously incorporated within the concept. Through the stylistically corresponding extension with the transept section, the ground plan of the church building was modified in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The object stands out for its aesthetic qualities, has pleasing proportions and particular detailing in design and material use. Noteworthy are the iron and brick-executed window traceries.
- Of urban planning value because the building plays a clearly recognisable role within the building ensemble of Veldwijk. It is situated in a green, park-like environment and within it—in combination with the other buildings and vegetation—it plays a very distinctive visual role. The building, situated on the west side of the railway line, together with the other buildings on Veldwijk, has been defining the appearance of Ermelo since the late nineteenth century and is important for the preservation of this historically developed situation.
- Of cultural-historical value as a symbol of a religious orientation. The church furthermore, as a component and 'central point' of the Veldwijk hospital, forms an important building which, together with the other buildings on the grounds of this hospital, constitutes a striking example within the development of institutional buildings from the late nineteenth century onwards. Within Ermelo, this institution has been a historically defining factor since 1884.
