The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel A

Description component A

The strongly horizontally-oriented MAIN BUILDING of the SANATORIUM, largely single-storey, is entirely symmetrically designed and consists of a raised central section and lower L-shaped side wings. Perpendicular to the north-south running main wings are some extensions with two storeys. The raised central section has three storeys, a rounded arch-shaped entrance section and is covered by a projecting hipped roof with red tiles. On the short ridge sits an elegant weathervane in the form of a noble stag. On either side of the raised central section are the lower side wings, covered with a gabled roof. On part of this—the transition from the central section to the lower parts—are strongly horizontal projections with window arrangements. These dormer-like projections have their own hipped roof with red tiles. At the far left and right, the L-shaped side wings are extended forward with a multi-sided projection. This gives the short east-west oriented side wing arms their own projecting hipped roof. Both side wings have at their ends a built-out curved pergola executed in concrete with a closing octagonal tea pavilion. The tea pavilions are partially open.

The building is constructed in yellow brick, using only stretcher bond. Some portal framings have a natural stone surround. The windows are almost everywhere still executed in the original steel.

On the FRONT FACE, the raised central section has a rounded arch-shaped entrance with decorative surround and a glazed door section. This door section has an elegant wrought iron door grille. On either side of the entrance are three rectangular iron windows. Above the entrance are on the upper storey three tall iron window sections with a balcony railing and a natural stone surround. Above these windows the name of the sanatorium is applied in metal letters. Directly below the projecting hipped roof is a window strip with five double windows with decorated spandrels.

On either side of the higher central section is an intermediate section that continues into the aforementioned dormers. In this intermediate section are (2x) three round iron hopper windows. Adjacent to this, this intermediate section transitions into a horizontal window strip.

The lower side wings on either side of the higher central section contain the patient rooms. At regular intervals in the facade plane are three-sided iron bay windows. The side wings end with projecting extensions with a projecting hipped roof and decorated spandrels. The rear facades of the main building also retain the original steel windows and doors.

On the REAR there are perpendicular to the high central section two wings with two storeys with a hipped roof covered in red tiles. These wings transition into two T-shaped ancillary buildings located behind them, each with a wooden belfry on each of the two hipped roofs. These ancillary buildings have one storey and an attic and are detailed in the same manner as the main mass. Between both T-shaped ancillary buildings are various original extensions and small buildings, as well as some modern barracks.

The INTERIOR of the shallow main building is still original. Its original spatial layout is also still present. The complex is largely provided with bomb-proof shelters. On either side of the raised central section on the ground floor are patient rooms in each wing. The wings with patient rooms are internally indirectly lit by a curved glass roof above which daylight enters via glazed roof panels in the rear of the saddle roof. On the storeys of the raised section is now the boarding house and was a residential unit. The ceiling of the central hall, divided into sections, is supported by ten round columns clad with tilework. On each side of the hall is a grand staircase to the boarding house storey. In the 'staircases' are round stained-glass windows and etched glass panes with abstracted figurative representations. In the hall, beneath the floor covering, are the original marble floors. In the rear wall are mosaics incorporated by Arnhem artist Schilling from 1939. One of the representations depicts the Good Samaritan. In the hall are furthermore a round clock and a weathervane from the building period.

Valuation

MAIN BUILDING DE HOOGE RIET (complex component A) from 1939, designed by architect E.J. Rothuizen.

- Of architectural-historical value as a well-preserved sanatorium building from the period between both World Wars. The object stands out through aesthetic qualities, has pleasing proportions and distinctive detailing in design and material use. Particular and characteristic for the time of its creation are the brick use, sober decoration and the use of steel windows and concrete. The interior of the building is largely preserved and furnished with monumental art from the building period. Particularly notable are the light provision in the lower side wings and the careful detailing. As a sanatorium building there is also a typological and a complex value. Outside the main building the subsequent extensions as well as the mortuary and boiler house have also been preserved in good condition. The complex is a design by the renowned architect E.J. Rothuizen and forms a representative example in his oeuvre.

- Of urban planning value because of the clearly recognisable role that the sanatorium plays in the village development of Ermelo and within the building ensemble of Veldwijk. The complex is situated in a green, park-like environment and plays a very distinctive visual role in it—in combination with the other monumental buildings and vegetation. The garden adds significant value to the complex.

- Of cultural-historical value within the development of psychiatric healthcare from the late nineteenth century onwards in the Netherlands. This complex, with all its components, constitutes a typologically important representative within this development.
