Omschrijving

Description
DOVECOTE (B) located at the rear of the house, partially set into the slope of the terp and connected by means of a wall with a lean-to, also covered with cross roof tiles. The dovecote, built on a square foundation, is constructed as a tower with three whitewashed facades on a grey-painted plinth and has two storeys separated by a cornice. The dovecote is fitted with a composite roof of four gabled roofs arranged in the form of a cross, with bitumen on top. The roof edges are provided with carved mouldings. The facades are articulated below in square recessed panels; above, these panels are terminated with segmental arches. The FRONT FACADE is considered to be the side perpendicular to the rear facade of the house, facing the coach house. In it are two chicken ladders in the first storey that meet at the top. Above are 11 dovecote holes with flat alighting stones under small arches in fair-faced brickwork. The LEFT SIDE FACADE has a 3x3-paned window in the first storey identical to the front facade. The REAR FACADE is unpainted and contains only a small window. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE faces the rear building and contains a door below and a hatch above.
Assessment
DOVECOTE built around 1850.
- Of architectural-historical importance as a good and intact example of a tall dovecote which moreover as a phenomenon in the south-west Betuwe constitutes a rarity.
- Of urban-planning importance because of its elevated location on the elongated plot between two parallel roads typical of this stretched ribbon village. The tower, together with the other components, forms a complex that is part of a historically developed building stock in a landscape setting.
- Of cultural-historical importance as an example of a dovecote attached to a manor house. Keeping pigeons was for a long time a lordly privilege. Later the construction of pigeon houses was valued only for the status of distinction it conveyed.
