Omschrijving
GEBOUW A

Description
BUILDING A
The ENAMELLING FACTORY with WATER TOWER was built in 1913, to a design by architect G. Beltman, and is situated at the corner of Noordstraat and Olde Hutstraat. Striking is that the head of the water tower is executed in the same style as the model-making workshop from 1902 and the warehouse from 1905, while the rest of the enamelling factory already displays much more the style of the more businesslike 'new building' movement. After the enamelling operations ceased in 1982, extensions were added and it was converted for use as a components warehouse.
The enamelling factory is built on an approximately square ground plan and has three storeys. The building volumes are grouped around a large factory hall, which is covered with a large number of saw-tooth roofs. The surrounding building volumes have a flat roof with bituminous covering.
The gables are built in reddish-brown brick. Yellow facing brick is incorporated as decoration in the rendered cornice and in the arch friezes of the water tower. The masonry is executed in stretcher bond. The use of concrete elements is visible in the north gable.
The most representative gable is the EAST GABLE on the factory street Olde Hutstraat. The gable plane has horizontal and vertical articulation through the application of segmental-arch-shaped, iron windows with glazing bars. The windows become smaller as they rise in the gable. The ground floor contains windows with a twenty-five-pane division, the windows on the first floor have a fifteen-pane division and on the second floor a ten-pane division. The gable plane is terminated with a decorative, rendered cornice, in which yellow facing brick is incorporated.
The SOUTH GABLE, in the same architecture as the east gable, is only partially visible due to adjacent buildings.
The WEST GABLE is completely integrated into the overall complex.
The NORTH GABLE, on Noordstraat, is constructed from concrete columns where iron plating fills the space between the columns.
The DRU factory is among the few enterprises in Gelderland still possessing their own WATER TOWER. The water tower, in contrast to the other parts of the enamelling factory, is richly provided with decoration. The 25 m. high tower is built in reddish-brown brick. The square shaft, in which the foundation year of DRU '1754' is indicated above a yellow horizontal band of facing brick, contains in three of the four gable planes a segmental-arch-shaped, iron window with glazing bars. The shaft is closed with a larger square concrete plate on which the water reservoir is placed. The four gable planes of the water reservoir are identical and each contain three window openings. The gable planes are terminated with arch friezes executed in yellow facing brick, above which a concrete cornice for decoration of the present flat roof. Originally the water tower was provided with a pyramid roof, which was lifted at the ridge and in this way formed a small turret.
In the INTERIOR concrete constructions are applied. The building volume to the north of the factory hall consists of a concrete skeleton of portal frames with high chamfered corners. This is probably one of the first concrete constructions in this form in the Netherlands. This construction is rare and historically interesting.
The building volumes on the east and south sides of the factory hall have a concrete construction which is built from beams in the transverse direction, which in the middle of the span are supported by a concrete column. The connection between the beam and the column has a chamfered angle.
Valuation
- Of architectural-historical value due to being a good and reasonably intact example of a factory building from the first quarter of the 20th century. The corner-sited building contains the water tower which, despite the absence of a roof but with details in yellow facing brick, forms a striking landmark. Furthermore, the water tower has rarity value because this concerns one of the few examples of a factory complex of which the tower has been preserved.
In the interior of the factory with three storeys, the application of the concrete construction which was remarkable for its time is particularly noteworthy. Saw-tooth roofs cover the large factory hall situated further back and form an important component within the building.
- Of urban planning significance due to its location at the corner of Noordstraat and Olde Hutstraat. The building forms part of a historically grown factory site and plays a defining role within it. Furthermore, the object has ensemble value in relation to its surrounding buildings.
- Of cultural-historical value due to its original function in relation to the production process of the iron foundry which is connected with the important industrial development in the Liemers and thereby represents an aspect of economic history.
