Inleiding

Waardering:

Introduction

Christelijk College Nassau-Veluwe, SCHOOL BUILDING in the manner of De Bazel, dating from 1922, with associated FENCING. The design is by P.H. van Lonkhuyzen. The protection concerns exclusively the main building, the original school building. The complex building has two storeys and surrounding hipped roofs.

The SCHOOL was founded in 1918 and initially occupied temporary premises in a building on the Vismarkt, where in 1919 it began with 26 pupils. The foundation stone for the school on the Stationslaan was laid on 26 April 1922, the opening, in the presence of minister De Visser, took place on 10 September 1923. In 1963, 1965, 1966, 1989, 1991 and 1994 the school was extended; these extensions do not fall under the protection.

The imposing main building was designed by Harderwijk architect P.H. van Lonkhuyzen, derived in every detail from the style of K.P.C. de Bazel, with particular reference to his building for the (Royal) Nederlandsche Heidemaatschappij in Arnhem from 1913. The very large school building originally stood free on all sides and set well back from the building line; since 1963 it has been coupled on the left rear to all the later extensions. By virtue of its free-standing position, the building accords with the garden-suburb character of the Stationslaan. To the right runs the Badweg. The site is surrounded by a low FENCE.

Description

The original school building, the main building of the current complex, is executed in very monumental form. The main structure is E-shaped: perpendicular to a long wing along the Stationslaan stand three shorter wings. The middle one of these is the shortest and has a somewhat higher ridge. This mass is pushed somewhat forward, creating a central risalit in the main facade. At the intersection stands an octagonal belfry tower with a low roof covered in copper. Later a carillon was installed in it. The side wings connect with stepped-back alignment to the main wing along the Stationslaan. Because this main wing steps back twice at the corners, once slightly and at the end very substantially, the side wings become more independent in character. Because the last step releases a large blind wall surface, that part appears as the blind side gable of the main wing. At the back, this double step is also recognisable in the form of a projecting section. This complex mass occasions the meeting ridges of the hipped roofs on either side of the central belfry tower to be emphasized three times with tower-like ventilation chimneys. The bell-shaped caps of these are covered in copper. The substantial overhang of the profiled drip moulding, resting on carved gutter brackets, emphatically closes off the facade horizontally.

The central risalit has a roof dormer in the form of a Venetian window. In greatly simplified form, the motif of the shouldered arch is repeated on the right and left part of the front wing in a smaller roof dormer. The right and left side wings have over almost their full width a heightening executed as a wooden roof dormer, which follows the half-octagon built out in the middle, except that on the left wing this angular section is built up in stone. This creates on this side the suggestion of a built-out stair tower. The form of the half-octagon recurs on both wings in the roof, which projects out from the main roof with a three-sided closure. On the middle perpendicularly placed wing, placed transversely, the old GYMNASIUM of one storey under a flat roof connects; this belongs to the original layout. The style is that of the main building, but in more sober execution.

The FRONT FACADE has a central risalit, in which the original main entrance in a portico under a balcony. This part has in the middle three windows, to the right and left two. On either side a broad section adjoins with always five plus five windows per storey, coupled by continuous window sills of basalt-lava, separated from the next series by a pronounced wall band. Instead of forming a corner risalit, the next section on each side, five windows wide, steps back again. The side wings facing toward the rear connect with a substantial stepping-back, blind corner to the main wing. In fact, the front side thus has a stepped, three times projecting central section. The hipped-roof form of the roof reinforces this image; the middle is hereby emphasized by the belfry tower on the central risalit. The three other corners of the ridge are marked by the aforementioned tower-like chimneys. Characteristic are the narrow windows of ground floor and first floor and the meander motif in black tarred brick as frieze above it, as accent repeated in squares between the storeys within the tight rhythm of the windows. To suggest a plinth, black bands are incorporated at the bottom of the facade. The black tarred brick elements contrast well with the yellow-grey brick, which determines the character.

The corner pilasters of the central risalit also show alternating use of horizontal black bands. On the basis of comparison with the identical facade detailing of the front facade of the building of the (Royal) Nederlandsche Heidemaatschappij in Arnhem, it may be supposed that the small six-pane glazing bars, now present in the Harderwijk fanlights, also belong in the lower panes there. Also the layout of the main mass breathes the same spirit as the Arnhem building. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE of the front wing is, as mentioned, blind. The facade of the right side wing has a staircase built out in the form of a half-octagon in the middle. The three sides of this have per storey one narrow window, of the same type as the rest of the facade. The blunt corners have projecting dentil decoration, creating a lively pattern. The right and left part of the facade are each six windows wide. The detailing of the facade corresponds with that of the front facade.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE is the same as the right, except that the tower-like staircase is here built higher in stone.

The REAR FACADES have a layout derived from the front facade, but greatly simplified. The meander frieze at the top also runs here. Otherwise parts are executed blind, have a single narrow window or two windows coupled as cross windows in pairs. The brickwork is kept simple here, albeit the slightly projecting brick-and-a-half courses above the windows are retained. The left leg, viewed from the rear, of the E-shape of the building mass is blind, the middle leg has a window with a three-part division above the roof of the gymnasium and the rear facade of the right leg is entirely hidden behind later extensions. The additions are executed partly in adapted form, partly in contemporary design; these building components do not fall under the protection. The INTERIOR is significant: the layout of the school building is entirely preserved, with the exception of a few subordinate, reversible alterations, such as the use of the vestibule behind the no longer used main entrance as a room. Lowered ceilings have been installed throughout, behind which mechanical ventilation is concealed. In the aforementioned vestibule, the colourful founding tile tableau in the left wall has been preserved. In the hall and the corridors lie the original tile floors; also the three staircases are in their original condition.

The site is surrounded by a low wrought-iron FENCE on a mortared wall with pillars, which is worked out in the same formal language as the school building.

Valuation:

SCHOOL BUILDING from 1922, with FENCE.

- Of architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of an imitation of De Bazel.

- Of cultural-historical value as a school building from this period.

- Of urban planning significance by virtue of its role in the street scene of the Stationslaan.
