Inleiding

Introduction

CITY VILLA 'Aurora' built in 1904 on the Prins Hendrikstraat designed in Art Nouveau style by architect JACOB JOHANNES POST (1873-1958). The street was laid out as a private initiative in 1900 at the behest of Johan Bernard Rensing, owner of the Boer Balink café located at the head of the street, and was largely built with houses designed by Post. The villa is situated in the western street frontage and here closes off to the south a series of simple dwelling houses which possess similar detailing and show great coherence with the villa. The northern terminus of the continuous block is formed by another villa by Post.

Post was from Friesland but worked mainly in Aalten, Lichtenvoorde and Winterswijk where he designed various dwelling houses and a number of shop premises with facades showing a mixture of Art Nouveau, Neo-Renaissance and Chalet styles. Villa 'Aurora' was inhabited by the architect himself and is one of the most richly executed houses within his oeuvre. The house is surrounded by a small garden which at the street side is bounded by simple wrought-iron FENCING with hinged gates. Originally the property was detached, now connected to the adjoining property by a later extension.

Description

Partially cellared CITY VILLA on a composite ground plan consisting of a two-storey tall and three window-bays wide right section and a three-storey tall, projecting left bay. At the rear of the property are a conservatory and an extension with plastered brickwork in half-brick bond with a flat roof. The house is closed off by a composite roof covered with red, partly glazed tuile du Nord tiles and drainage takes place via gutters. In the roof are two simple cemented chimneys and in the right roof slope of the left building volume a recent roof dormer has been installed. The facades have a continuous black plastered plinth and are laid in white brick in English bond with red joints. In combination with this, red brick has been used, among other things in the form of brickwork stripes. All facade openings are provided with hard stone window sills with ornamented corner pieces. At the top and bottom the windows possess a surround executed in plasterwork. At the top this consists of plastered quarter-round lintels with incised Art Nouveau motifs, closed off by segmental arches of red and white brick. Between relieving sill and window sill run vertical strips of red brick. Most windows of the first storey have fanlights with floral stained glass infill. In the asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE on the right in the first storey is a rectangular bay window with paired single-glazed sash windows with three-light fanlights. To the left of this bay window is located beneath a glazed canopy the slightly recessed entrance. The wooden panel door detailed in Art Nouveau style, with multiple lights, has a decorative curved glazing bar pattern and incised motifs. The three-light fanlight is filled with coloured stained glass with floral motifs. On the projecting bay window is a balcony with a slightly projecting open-work parapet wall of red brick, which appears again as the facade closure of this facade section. On the first floor on the right is a Dutch door with three-light fanlight and on the left a Dutch window with three-light fanlight. The tower-like left section is closed off on the front with three sides. In the first storey are in the two outer sides single-glazed sash windows with two-light fanlights and in the front a single-glazed sash window with three-light fanlight. In the second storey is an internal balcony provided with a balustrade as described earlier. A Dutch door with three-light fanlight gives access to this balcony. The flanking sides each possess a blank window. Above the balcony the attic storey has a Dutch window with three-light fanlight. In the segmental arch of this window the text 'Aurora' is engraved. Above this the facade section is closed off by a crown executed with false joints consisting of a raised central section flanked by shoulders with projecting corner pieces. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE of the property is no longer visible. The austere LEFT SIDE FACADE has a single-glazed sash window with three-light fanlight on the ground floor and two sash windows in the second storey. The tower structure is closed off by a continuous balustrade as described in the front facade. The conservatory which is situated on the right against the asymmetrically arranged REAR FACADE has a truncated hipped roof covered with red tuile du Nord tiles. The conservatory is constructed from a composite wooden window frame above a brick parapet wall which is closed off by a continuous plastered drip moulding. The fanlights of the conservatory are provided with coloured stained glass in a geometric pattern. In the rear facade below the fanlights are sash doors with single-glazed side lights and in the left side facade of the conservatory two windows. Above the extensions the rear facade of the house consists of three unequal window bays with centrally in the tower volume a six-light sash window with three-light fanlight provided with a surround in ornamental brickwork. The lower facade section to the left of this has a Dutch window with three-light fanlight. In the broader facade section furthest to the left is a window beneath a projecting brick frieze above which is probably a later attic extension constructed in style, in which a non-original window has been placed. The INTERIOR is still largely intact and contains on the ground floor many valuable elements such as plaster ceilings with ornamental floral motifs, two fireplaces in the adjoining rooms and draught doors with worked glass predominantly featuring 'whiplash' motifs. Striking in the hallway is the casement panelling in which small opal glass panels are incorporated with seventeenth-century scenes, painted in a technique imitating glazed tiles. Also present here is a richly executed terrazzo floor, laid by the Italian family MONASSO who worked in Winterswijk and surroundings. On a wall in the draught vestibule is a stucco medallion in which within a surround of oak leaf architectural attributes are incorporated, alluding to the original inhabitant.

Valuation

CITY VILLA built in 1904 designed by architect J.J. POST.

-Of architectural historical value as a good and well-preserved example of a dwelling house from the beginning of the twentieth century that was built in Art Nouveau style. The property stands out for aesthetic qualities in interior and exterior such as the rich use of materials and the fine detailing of the facades in which many floral Art Nouveau motifs are applied, as well as for the special ground floor interior which is still in a high degree in original condition. The property is of importance as one of the richer examples of a villa in Art Nouveau style from the oeuvre of J.J. Post, who designed a large number of houses and shop premises in the important Achterhoek centres.

-Of urban planning value as part of a series of small villas and dwelling houses on the Prins Hendrikstraat, which were predominantly built between 1900 and 1910. The house plays an important role here in the appearance of the street as the closing property of a series of houses designed by Post, which show great coherence with one another in detailing and use of materials.

-Of cultural-historical value as an expression of a social-economic development, as a manifestation of the emergence of a wealthier middle class in Winterswijk. For this class attractive dwellings were built on a street specially laid out for this purpose.
