Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
WASHING MILL (1912-1922) built as part of the complex 'NV Tricotfabriek G.J. Willink' to the design of architect AREND GERRIT BELTMAN (1869-1934) with the collaboration of engineer MARTEN JAN CHRISTIAAN BROUWER (1873-1944). The washing mill is situated almost centrally on the triangular site enclosed by Groenloseweg, Wilhelminastraat and Prins Hendrikstraat in Winterswijk. The detached washing mill was built in three phases. The eastern half consisting of three storeys was completed in 1912. In 1915 the washing mill was extended on the west side with one storey. In the third phase three storeys were constructed, of which the uppermost (fourth) storey, dating from 1922, was built more lightly.
Description
The WASHING MILL with rectangular floor plan consists of three and partially four storeys enclosed by a flat roof. It is a white-painted concrete frame skeleton to the Hennebique system. The building has a transparent character through the infill of the concrete skeleton with large window sections with recessed fields. The vertical articulation of the first three storeys consists of twice a narrow, once a wide pilaster on the division of the window axes. The pilasters end on the third storey in respectively twice one console, once two consoles terminated by a main cornice. Between the pilasters are regularly distributed twelve-pane windows (3x4) with cast-iron glazing bars in the first three storeys. The fourth storey distinguishes itself from the lower three storeys in design through the use of two eight-pane windows (2x4) instead of one twelve-pane window, and a decorative dentil moulding as frieze. The NORTH GABLE is a longitudinal gable, subdivided into seven bays consisting of three window axes and one bay consisting of two window axes. In the third bay from the right, the central window axis of which deviates through the use of double clamped loading hatches for a provisioning shaft. Also situated at the far right against the gable is a fire escape. The EAST SIDE is the gable end, which was previously connected with a former part of the industrial complex. The east side shows three storeys, each storey subdivided into three bays by means of concrete pillars. On the third storey these spaces are infilled. The SOUTH GABLE is a longitudinal gable virtually identical to the north gable. On the ground floor is located in the third bay a filled-in entrance portico. The WEST GABLE is a gable end consisting of three bays with a window arrangement identical to that in the north and south gables. The ground floor is a closed gable section, which bordered a former part of the industrial complex. The INTERIOR concrete skeleton forms one large space interrupted by regularly distributed concrete pillars to the Hennebique system.
Valuation
WASHING MILL (1912-1922) built as part of the complex 'NV Tricotfabriek G.J. Willink' commissioned by G.J. Willink to the design of architect AREND GERRIT BELTMAN (1869-1934). The washing mill is of general cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning importance:
- as a good example of a historically developed washing mill as part of the complex to the design of architect Arend Gerrit Beltman
- as a representative example of rational factory construction with a characteristic flexible modular system
- because of its rarity value as one of the earliest preserved examples of a concrete frame skeleton to the Hennebique system in the Netherlands
- because of its ensemble value as a functional component of the complex.
