Inleiding
INLAATSLUIS voor de monding van de binnengracht aan de Berkelsingel uit 1885, ontworpen door stadsarchitect F.H. Etteger.
Onbekend is wie de opdrachtgever of uitvoerder van deze sluis is geweest. Vanaf ca. 1950 is het Waterschap van de Berkel belast geweest met de regulering van de binnenwateren in het stadscentrum. Sinds enige jaren ressorteert de sluis onder Waterleiding Maatschappij Doetinchem.
De inlaatsluis is aan de noordzijde van de Berkelsingel geplaatst tussen het betegelde voetpad en het talud van de waterloop. Vanaf de straat valt enkel de circa een halve meter hoge gietijzeren tandwielkast op nabij de Berkelruïne tegenover Ruitershofje 34.
Omschrijving
De gemetselde, met het talud schuin-aflopende landhoofden zijn trechter-gewijs in het verlengde van de sluisdoorgang geplaatst. De gemetselde dekstukken van de landhoofden zijn onder een schuine hoek op de metsellagen geplaatst. Halverwege het talud springen de landhoofden ter plaatse van een hek als kering van grofvuil, in. De uiteinden van de landhoofden eindigen in het water. Boven de waterdoorgang bevindt zich een in kruisverband gemetseld muurvlak. In de hoeken met de landhoofden zijn verticale glijbanen aanwezig waartussen de afsluitklep geleid wordt. Middels een heugelstang is deze verbonden met de gietijzeren rondsel op de overstekende betonnen, lichtgetoogde latei die rust op, op de landhoofden opgemetselde kolommen. Ter weerszijden bevindt zich een natuurstenen blok. De rondsel is bevestigd middels een ijzeren plaat op de latei en is door opengewerkte inzwenkende wangen aan weerszijden verstevigd.
Waardering
- Als cultuurhistorische waarde vormt het objekt een belangrijk voorbeeld van een inlaatsluis met gietijzeren heugelstang uit de 19de eeuwse industrie en techniek. Daarnaast geeft het een indruk van het werk van de stadsarchitect F.H. Etteger die ook als waterbouwkundige werkzaam was.

INLET LOCK for the mouth of the inner canal at the Berkelsingel from 1885, designed by city architect F.H. Etteger.

Description
The mortared abutments, sloping with the slope, are positioned funnel-wise in the extension of the lock passage. The mortared capping stones of the abutments are positioned at an oblique angle to the mortar courses. Midway up the slope, the abutments project at the location of a gate to prevent coarse waste from entering. The ends of the abutments terminate in the water. Above the water passage is a wall surface mortared in English bond. In the corners with the abutments there are vertical slide channels between which the closing gate is guided. By means of a hoist rod it is connected to the cast-iron gear on the protruding concrete, slightly arched lintel which rests on pillars mortared on the abutments. On either side there is a natural stone block. The gear is fastened by means of an iron plate on the lintel and is braced on both sides by open inswinging cheeks.
Assessment
