Inleiding
Voormalig PAKHUIS 'AFRIKA' met laad- en lossteiger, in opdracht van de N.V. Handelskade gebouwd in 1915 naar ontwerp van A.J. Joling en in 1935 aan de buitenkant ingrijpend verbouwd door de architect J. de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk in een stijl die invloed van het Functionalisme vertoont. De monolitische betonskeletstructuur, uit 1915 is een vroeg voorbeeld van het 'mushroom' systeem in Nederland.
Het pakhuis maakt deel uit van een rij aaneengesloten pakhuizen die, als strook geklemd liggen tussen het N.S.-emplacement en de noordelijk gelegen IJhaven. Tot de inrichting van het gebied in de directe omgeving horen ook de loskades en de rolkraan. N.B. Het pakhuis, op onderdelen gewijzigd, is niet meer als zodanig in gebruik.
Omschrijving
Het in bakstenen kruisverband opgetrokken pand heeft een vrijwel rechthoekige plattegrond en telt vijf bouwlagen. Het dak is samengesteld uit vlakke delen en schuine dakschilden.
De voorgevel is naar de stadszijde gekeerd en wordt gekenmerkt door een uitgewassen betonnen frame (negen traveeën) met invullingen van baksteen. De vier verdiepingen kragen over zodat de draagconstructie van het monolithisch betonskelet zichtbaar is. Losgaten bevinden zich in de tweede, zesde en achtste travee en op de begane grond, de laatste met oorspronkelijke strokendeuren naar de betonnen losperron. In drie traveeën hebben de losgaten de oorspronkelijke dubbele luiken. Links en rechts is op de twee hoeken van de verdieping in metalen belettering de naam van het pakhuis 'Afrika' aangebracht, zowel aan de voor- als achterzijde. De linker hoektravee wordt in beslag genomen door een trappenhuis. Boven de begane grond, aan de linkerzijde bevindt zich een naar achter gelegen, smalle uitbouw die ten dele voor een travee van het aangrenzende pakhuis is gebouwd. De zijkant van de aanbouw die haaks op de gevel is geplaatst bevat drie ramen met glazen bakstenen.
De achtergevel, gericht naar het IJ, bezit over de volle breedte van het pand een losperron, opgetrokken uit beton, baksteen en staal, bereikbaar via twee trapjes, respectievelijk evenwijdig en haaks op de gevel. In het perron bevinden zich brede losopeningen en gekoppelde raampjes. Op het losperron sluiten strokendeuren aan van het enkelvoudige en harmonica-type. De losgaten eindigen tegen de liggers van het betonnen frame, die aan het losperron met doorgetrokken latei. Voor de losgaten op de verdiepingen zijn aan stalen kettingen, inklapbare laadbalkons gehangen. De gevel wordt bovenaan ter plaatse van de middelste vier traveeën, afgesloten door een convexe stalen plaat. Het losgat hieronder bevat als enige in de gevel een hijsbalk. Hierboven op het dak bevindt zich een kubische betonopbouw met flauw bollend dak.
Interieur In het grid van het monolithisch betonskelet bevinden zich 3 x 8 vrijstaande kolommen met paddestoelkapitelen per bouwlaag.
Waardering
Het pakhuis 'Afrika', oorspronkelijk uit 1915, is van algemeen belang wegens architectuur-, cultuur-, en bouwhistorische alsook typologische en industrieel-archeologische waarde, als vroeg voorbeeld van betonskeletbouw met paddestoelkolommen in Nederland en als onderdeel van een historisch gegroeide havenbebouwing met bedrijfs- en/of opslagfunctie uit het stoomtijdperk. Former WAREHOUSE 'AFRICA' with loading and unloading jetty, built on commission of the N.V. Handelskade in 1915 to a design by A.J. Joling and extensively modified on the outside in 1935 by architect J. de Bie Leuveling Tjeenk in a style showing the influence of Functionalism. The monolithic concrete skeleton structure, from 1915, is an early example of the 'mushroom' system in the Netherlands.
The warehouse forms part of a row of adjoining warehouses which lie as a strip wedged between the N.S. railway yard and the IJhaven to the north. The installation of the area in the immediate surroundings also includes the quays and the mobile crane. N.B. The warehouse, modified in parts, is no longer in use as such.
Description
The building, constructed in brick in stretcher bond, has an approximately rectangular ground plan and has five storeys. The roof is composed of flat sections and sloping roof panels.
The front facade faces the city side and is characterized by a weathered concrete frame (nine bays) with brick infill. The four upper storeys cantilever so that the supporting structure of the monolithic concrete skeleton is visible. Loading holes are located in the second, sixth and eighth bay and on the ground floor, the latter with original strip doors leading to the concrete loading platform. In three bays the loading holes have original double shutters. On the left and right corners of the upper floor, in metal lettering the name of the warehouse 'Africa' is mounted, both on the front and rear sides. The left corner bay is occupied by a stairwell. Above the ground floor, on the left side there is a narrow extension set back, which is partly built for a bay of the adjacent warehouse. The side of the extension which is placed at right angles to the facade contains three windows with glass brick.
The rear facade, facing the IJ, has along the full width of the building a loading platform constructed from concrete, brick and steel, accessible via two staircases, respectively parallel and perpendicular to the facade. In the platform there are wide loading openings and coupled small windows. On the loading platform strip doors of the single and accordion types connect. The loading holes end against the beams of the concrete frame, which at the loading platform with a continuous lintel. For the loading holes on the upper floors, foldable loading balconies are suspended from steel chains. The facade is closed at the top at the location of the middle four bays by a convex steel plate. The loading hole below contains the only hoist beam in the facade. Above this on the roof is a cubic concrete structure with a gently curved roof.
Interior In the grid of the monolithic concrete skeleton there are 3 x 8 free-standing columns with mushroom capitals per storey.
Valuation
The warehouse 'Africa', originally from 1915, is of general importance because of its architectural, cultural and construction-historical as well as typological and industrial-archaeological value, as an early example of concrete skeleton construction with mushroom columns in the Netherlands and as part of a historically developed port building with commercial and/or storage function from the steam era.
