Inleiding
In 1901 gebouwde WEGKAPEL gewijd aan St. Jozef. De kapel is gelegen in het centrum van Horst op een perceel op de hoek van de Herstraat en de St. Josephstraat. De kapel is uitgevoerd in neogotische stijl en valt onder meer op door het rijk uitgevoerde maaswerk in de vensters. Door de situering en fraaie verschijningsvorm domineert de kapel het straatbeeld ter plaatse.
De huidige kapel is vermoedelijk gebouwd ter vervanging van een achttiende-eeuwse kapel op dezelfde plaats, die bekend staat als 'Het Heilige Huisken van de Heilige Familie'.
Omschrijving
De vrijstaande WEGKAPEL telt één bouwlaag en is opgetrokken in baksteen op een rechthoekige plattegrond, met aan de achterzijde een driezijdige apsis met lagere nokhoogte. Het met leien in Maasdekking gedekte zadeldak van het hoofdvolume ligt verzonken tussen twee puntgevels. De apsis heeft een met leien belegd driezijdig schilddak. De afwatering vindt plaats via geprofileerde bakgoten op een tandfries. De gevels zijn gemetseld in kruisverband en hebben een met pleisterwerk bekleedde plint die is voorzien van ingehakte motieven. Op de gevelhoeken van de kapel bevinden zich overhoeks geplaatste steunberen, voorzien van gepleisterde dekplaten op de versnijdingen. Aan de voorgevel steken deze steunberen door de gootlijst heen en eindigen in pinakels. De gevelopeningen zijn allen spitsboogvormig afgesloten en aan de onderzijde voorzien van hardstenen, geprofileerde lekdorpels.
Centraal in de VOORGEVEL bevindt zich een dubbele paneeldeur onder een spitsboogvormig bovenlicht gevuld met maaswerk in lancetboogmotieven. De deurvleugels hebben elk een glaspaneel met smeedijzeren traliewerk. Aan weerszijden van de deur smalle spitsboognissen met hardstenen lekdorpel. De overgang naar de geveltop wordt gevormd door een brede segmentboog op gepleisterde aanzetstenen. De gevel wordt bekroond door een gemetselde toppilaster met kruis op een gestucte console. De RECHTER ZIJGEVEL en LINKER ZIJGEVEL bevatten elk twee spitsboogvormig afgesloten vensters bestaande uit onderramen en oorspronkelijke spitsboogvormige bovenlichten gevuld met maaswerk in rijke driepasmotieven. De blinde ACHTERGEVEL wordt bekroond door een kruis.
Het INTERIEUR van de kapel bestaat uit een kleine rechthoekige ruimte afgesloten met een houten tongewelf. Hier zijn onder meer van belang de beschildering van het gewelf met sterren op een blauwe ondergrond, de zwart-witte tegelvloer en de altaarkast tegen de oostwand van de kapel. Deze kast die de afsluiting vormt van de ruimte in de apis, bestaat uit een enkele en een dubbele deurvleugel, gevuld met glas binnen een horizontale roedeverdeling. Aan de bovenzijde is de kast rondboogvormig afgesloten met een bovenlicht voorzien van waaiervormige roeden. Onder de kast een plank op houten consoles.
Waardering
De WEGKAPEL aan de Herstraat heeft architectuurhistorische en typologische waarde als goed en gaaf voorbeeld van een omstreeks 1900 gebouwde kapel in neogotische stijl, die onder meer opvalt vanwege de opvallende, rijk uitgevoerde spitsboogvensters met maaswerk en het gaaf bewaarde interieur met onder meer een zeldzame altaarkast. De kapel is van bovenregionale cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van een religieuze en culturele ontwikkeling en heeft situeringswaarden als onderdeel van de historische kern van Horst, waar de kapel vanwege de markante en voor wegkapellen gebruikelijke ligging op de kruising van twee wegen een grote beeldbepalende waarde bezit. A WAYSIDE CHAPEL dedicated to St. Joseph built in 1901. The chapel is situated in the centre of Horst on a plot at the corner of Herstraat and St. Josephstraat. Description
The detached WAYSIDE CHAPEL comprises one storey and is constructed in brick on a rectangular floor plan, with on the rear a three-sided apse with lower ridge height. The slate-covered gabled roof of the main volume in Maas covering is recessed between two pointed gables. The apse has a three-sided hipped roof clad with slate. The rainwater drainage takes place via profiled brick gutters on a toothed frieze. The facades are laid in cross bond and have a plasterwork-clad plinth embellished with incised motifs. On the facade corners of the chapel there are buttresses placed diagonally, provided with plastered coping stones at the intersections. On the front facade these buttresses pass through the gutter line and terminate in pinnacles. All facade openings are closed with pointed arches and are provided at the bottom with hard stone, profiled drip mouldings.
Central to the FRONT FACADE is a double panelled door beneath a pointed arch-shaped fanlight filled with tracery in lancet arch motifs. Each door leaf has a glass panel with wrought-iron grillwork. On either side of the door narrow pointed arch niches with hard stone drip mouldings. The transition to the gable top is formed by a broad segmental arch on plastered setting stones. The facade is crowned by a brick top pilaster with cross on a stuccoed console. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE and LEFT SIDE FACADE each contain two pointed arch-shaped windows consisting of lower lights and original pointed arch-shaped fanlights filled with tracery in rich trefoil motifs. The blind REAR FACADE is crowned by a cross.
The INTERIOR of the chapel consists of a small rectangular space enclosed with a wooden barrel vault. Notable features include the painting of the vault with stars on a blue ground, the black-and-white tile floor and the altar cupboard against the east wall of the chapel. This cupboard, which forms the closing of the space in the apse, consists of a single and double door leaf, filled with glass within a horizontal glazing bar arrangement. At the top the cupboard is closed with a segmental arch with a fanlight provided with fan-shaped glazing bars. Beneath the cupboard a shelf on wooden consoles.
