Omschrijving
Inleiding
Symmetrische indeling voorgevel.

Description
Introduction
The South Netherlands Lace Factory was established in 1928 and is housed in a complex consisting of three parts. The oldest part concerns the current storage space, which is set back somewhat from the street. This building dates from 1928 and originally functioned as a CIGAR FACTORY. The lace factory was initially located on an adjacent plot and moved around 1930 to the present complex. To the west of the storage space is the OFFICE which was built in 1930 and originally served as a dwelling. On the north side, both buildings border a large FACTORY HALL which was built in 1939 and houses the machinery. The building complex is situated on an exit road from Horst. The whole is in virtually original condition and, partly due to the presence of a large part of the inventory, is of great importance from an industrial-archaeological perspective. It concerns the last enterprise in the Netherlands where cotton lace is produced.
The factory hall derives its protection from the presence of a number of rare machines that are used in the production process of the lace. The factory hall is worthy of protection because of its relationship with the inventory.
Description
The former CIGAR FACTORY has a rectangular floor plan and comprises two storeys plus an attic storey. The building is covered with a half-hipped roof with tiles du Nord. The building material used is brick with masonry in half-brick bond.
Rectangular wooden doors and windows. Windows with fanlights with glazing bars. In the front facade artificial stone lintels and sill stones. In the right side facade brick relieving arches and sill stones.
Symmetrical arrangement of front facade. Rectangular wooden door with a rectangular window on either side. Above the door and windows a broad band of white plasterwork with the name "Zuid Ned. Kantfabriek N.V." inscribed in it. In the second storey three windows and in the top gable a rectangular wooden hatch with two narrow side lights. In the right side facade in the first and second storey five windows. In the second storey in place of a hatch there is now a rectangular wooden window.
The structure of the INTERIOR is largely intact.
The former OFFICE comprises one storey plus an attic storey. The building is covered with a mansard roof with tiles du Nord. The building material used is brick with masonry in half-brick bond. Rectangular wooden windows and door.
The front door set back somewhat in the left part of the front facade with leaded glass fanlights and side lights. Above the front door a facade stone from 1930.
In the right part of the front facade a five-sided oriel in one storey with flat roof. Oriel windows with leaded glass fanlights. In the attic storey in the front facade two windows with glazing bars. Both windows with artificial stone sill stones and lintels. In the top gable a small narrow window. In the right side facade a window with a leaded glass fanlight. The structure of the interior is largely intact as evidenced by the arrangement of corridor, stairwell, living room, kitchen and office.
The FACTORY HALL is built in line with the former office and cigar factory. The building comprises one storey and is covered with two parallel gabled roofs with tiles du Nord. In the right side facade rectangular tall steel windows. In the rear facade and the left side facade rectangular aluminium windows.
In the middle section of the left side facade a rectangular wooden door. In the factory hall there are a number of unique machines for the production of lace (fixed and nailed to the floor). These include: lace machines and a cross-rinsing machine from the machine factory Emil Krenzler in Wuppertal-Barmen (Germany) from around 1930; a measuring apparatus for lace from around 1920 (modernised around 1980); a pressing apparatus for lace on a wooden base from around 1928 (modernised around 1980); a cutting machine for lace from around 1950 from the firm Alfred Heitzman in Monarchy, New Jersey (USA); two machines for the production of nylon lace from around 1957 from machine factory Karl Mayer (Germany).
Valuation
The former cigar factory with adjoining office is a rare example of austere industrial construction in strict brick architecture and externally largely intact and original. However, the most important values lie in the fact that this complex, built in phases, houses a production process that is barely traceable elsewhere in the Netherlands: so-called "antiquarian production". The various machines are of importance as part of the inventory, as indispensable links in the production process and in part considered in themselves because of their rarity.
The complex is of local townscape importance as an example of the then spatially-historically characteristic location of emerging enterprise along an exit road from Horst.
On the basis of these values, the former factory building with office represents a matter of general interest.
