Inleiding

Introduction

Steel lifting bridge located near the Apostelweg in Griendtsveen. A total of four lifting bridges were built around 1905. These served and serve for the passage of traffic in this village.

Description

Steel lifting bridge of the so-called type A1.

The deck has a load-bearing structure of steel girders with a wooden deck laid over it.

The structure is no longer authentic while the deck is also no longer movable. Originally two poles or railings ran along the deck which moved with it. With a renovation this pole was replaced by a railing for safety reasons. The deck rotates in two forged eyes, which are attached to the underside of the hamei posts.

The lifting bridge is built according to the Amsterdam type. The hamei gate consists of two freestanding hamei posts, which are connected to each other only by two tension rods. These tension rods are bent towards each other in the middle and coupled together. Each of the hamei posts is constructed from two U-profiles which are riveted back-to-back with their webs against the flanges of an I-profile. On top of the posts a steel cap in the form of a tent roof is placed. The hamei posts are supported by each two braces of round steel in the longitudinal direction and one in the transverse direction.

The balance is constructed from two balance beams with between them a structure of rails and diagonals. Both beams are executed as I-profile, as are the diagonals and rails between them, which function as a kind of counterweight. A ballast box is absent, so the bridge will not be completely balanced. Also at the location of the pivot points there is an I-profile as a transverse rail. Above the deck a cross-bracing is installed between the beams, while both ends of the beams are connected by a tube profile or round iron. The balance rotates between the two hamei posts. From the end of both beams a chain runs to the deck. On both beams a truss is mounted, with at the location of the pivot points two compression struts in inverted V-form. The tension rods of this truss consist partly of round steel. The ends consist of two flat steel profiles which fork around the beam and are attached to it by means of a hinge. Above the deck between the round steel and the fork a tensioning device or turnbuckle is located. The bridges are moved by means of a steel winding gear. This winding gear is driven by hand by means of a crank. From the winding gear a chain runs horizontally to the underside of one of the hamei posts and from there via a pulley to a second pulley, attached to the end of the balance at the crotch.

Via this pulley the chain goes back to the underside of the hamei post, where it is fastened. The speed of movement is thereby halved, as is the force required for rotating the crank.

Valuation

The lifting bridge is of historical importance for the development of the peat village Griendtsveen. The bridge is also of architectural and historical importance for the typological development of lifting bridges and for the history of building techniques. The bridge possesses high-quality aesthetic qualities.

The bridge forms part of the peat village Griendtsveen of which the cultural-historical value is considerable. The bridge possesses from a building-technical point of view a sound and recognizable structure. In terms of design such a bridge does not exist elsewhere in the Netherlands. On the basis of these values the lifting bridge of the Apostelweg at Griendtsveen is of general importance.
