Inleiding
Het SCHOOLGEBOUW met twee leslokalen is gelegen in het buitengebied van IJzerlo aan de zuidzijde van de Dinxperlosestraatweg en is gebouwd in 1914. Het gebouw is opgetrokken in traditionalistische bouwstijl waarbij de roedeverdeling van de ramen eigentijdse invloeden heeft. In 1880 werd in Nederland het eerste scholenbouwbesluit uitgevaardigd. Deze bepaalde onder meer dat er in het klaslokaal per leerling een oppervlakte van 0,8m2 beschikbaar moest zijn en een luchtinhoud van 3,6m3. De hoogte van de lokalen moest 4,5m bedragen. Ook werden voorschriften gegeven over de grootte van de ramen en de plaatsing hiervan. Om de bestaande wantoestanden tegen te gaan waarbij teveel leerlingen in te kleine ruimten werden gepropt kwamen ook hiervoor nieuwe regels. In een leslokaal mochten niet meer dan 100 leerlingen waarbij bij meer dan 50 leerlingen de mogelijkheid moest bestaan dat het vertrek in tweeën gedeeld kon worden. Bij de bouw van de school in IJzerlo moest aan al deze voorschriften worden voldaan.
In 1901 werd in Nederland de leerplicht ingevoerd. De achterliggende gedachte bij de invoering van deze wet was de bestrijding van de armoede in het algemeen en de zorg voor de jeugd door ze via het onderwijs een onbezorgde jeugd te bezorgen. Hierdoor ontstond er een grotere behoefte aan schoolgebouwen. De situering van de school in IJzerlo is niet willekeurig daar zich in de directe omgeving een concentratie van woonhuizen bevindt.
In 1937 zijn twee ramen in de voorgevel gewijzigd zodat de school dienst kon doen als magazijn voor de Coöperatieve Landbouwvereniging van Aalten. Het gebouw verkeert voor de rest in vrijwel ongewijzigde staat en is momenteel in gebruik als atelier.
Omschrijving
Het eenlaags SCHOOLGEBOUW is opgetrokken op een nagenoeg rechthoekige grondslag met aan achterzijde een uitbouw ter plaatse waarvan zich de toiletten bevinden. Het schilddak waarvan het achterschild iets doorloopt, is bedekt met gesmoorde opnieuw verbeterde Hollandse pannen. De nok, met op de uiteinden een piron, loopt evenwijdig aan de weg. In het voorschild bevindt zich een dakkapel onder een plat dak waarin twee gekoppelde enkelruits ramen. Het dak watert af via houten bakgoten op klossen. Aan linkerzijde van het schoolgebouw bevindt zich een vierkante aanbouw onder een schilddak. De bakstenen gevels zijn gemetseld in kruisverband en het trasraam is afgesloten door een rollaag.
De VOORGEVEL bevat zes grote vensters (drie per klaslokaal) met in elk een achtruits raam met drieruits bovenlicht (valraam). Tussen het derde en het vierde raam een gedenksteen met de tekst: "IJZERLO - 1914". De LINKER ZIJGEVEL heeft rechts een aanbouw en links een portiek bestaande uit een brede uitsparing in de gevel afgesloten door een latei op consoles. In het portiek bevindt zich een dubbele houten deur met vierruits bovenlicht en enkelruits zijlichten met enkelruits bovenlicht. Aan rechterzijde van de deur hangt een schoolbel. De aanbouw rechts heeft in de frontgevel (noordoosten) links een raam met een houten luik en rechts een houten deur. In de linker zijgevel zit een houten deur, de rechter zijgevel is blind.
De ACHTERGEVEL heeft in het midden een uitbouw onder een doorgetrokken dakschild ter plaatse waarvan zich de toiletten bevinden. De uitbouw heeft in de zuidgevel zes vensters. De linker en rechter zijgevel zijn blind. Aan weerszijden van de uitbouw bevinden zich twee zesruits valramen.
De RECHTER ZIJGEVEL heeft rechts in de gevel een portiek gevormd door een uitsparing in de gevel afgesloten door een latei op consoles. De deur is aan deze zijde verwijderd en vervangen door een rolluik die niet onder de bescherming valt.
Het INTERIEUR is grotendeels bewaard gebleven en heeft een tweedeling met aan de achterzijde een gang en aan voorzijde twee klaslokalen. De deur- en raamkozijnen zijn nog oorspronkelijk. Op de toiletdeuren staat de vermelding: "meisjes", "jongens" en "waterplaats". De gang bezit een houten plafond met kraaldelen.

The SCHOOLBUILDING with two classrooms is located in the outlying area of IJzerlo on the south side of the Dinxperlosestraatweg and was built in 1914. The single-storey SCHOOLBUILDING is constructed on a virtually rectangular ground plan with an extension at the rear where the toilets are located. The hipped roof, of which the rear pitch extends slightly further, is covered with dampened and newly improved Dutch tiles. The ridge, with a pirn at each end, runs parallel to the road. In the front pitch there is a roof dormer with a flat roof containing two coupled single-pane windows. The roof drains via wooden gutters on blocks. On the left side of the school building there is a square extension under a hipped roof. The brick facades are laid in cross bond and the tuff stone window is closed by a roller shutter.
The FRONT FACADE contains six large windows (three per classroom) each with a twelve-pane window with three-pane fanlight (French window). Between the third and fourth window there is a commemorative stone with the text: "IJZERLO - 1914". The LEFT SIDE FACADE has an extension on the right and on the left a porch consisting of a wide recess in the facade closed by a lintel on consoles. In the porch there is a double wooden door with four-pane fanlight and single-pane side lights with single-pane fanlight. On the right side of the door hangs a school bell. The extension on the right has in the front facade (north-east) on the left a window with a wooden shutter and on the right a wooden door. In the left side facade is a wooden door, the right side facade is blank.
The REAR FACADE has in the middle an extension under a continuous roof pitch where the toilets are located. The extension has six windows in the south facade. The left and right side facades are blank. On either side of the extension are two six-pane French windows.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has on the right a porch formed by a recess in the facade closed by a lintel on consoles. The door on this side has been removed and replaced by a roller shutter which is not subject to protection.
The INTERIOR is largely preserved and has a division with a corridor at the rear and two classrooms at the front. The door and window frames are still original. On the toilet doors is written: "girls", "boys" and "washplace". The corridor has a wooden ceiling with beaded panels.
