Omschrijving

Description

The SACRED HEART IMAGE is placed on a high octagonal base of tufa stone, closed at the top with a profiled moulding. On this base is an octagonal basement with four kneeling angels at the corners. On one of the sides is the text: "Jesus King of Hearts Have Mercy Upon Us". On plaques on another side: "Sacred Heart of Jesus bless Beuningen A.D. 1920. My Kingdom is not of this world". On the basement is the Christ figure placed. The Christ figure is clothed in a long pleated garment and makes a blessing gesture with his right hand.

Valuation

SACRED HEART IMAGE on base from 1920.

- Of artistic history value as a fine and intact example of a Sacred Heart image as a monumental garden sculpture from the late 19th century and early 20th century, a period in which the formal language of historical architectural and art styles (gothic, renaissance), combined with elements from the new art (Art Nouveau or Jugendstil) still played a major role. Given the formal language (in the neogothic tradition), the image is older than the base with angels, which according to the inscriptions dates from 1920. Nevertheless, this traditionally designed base fits well with the image.

- Of urban planning / situational value as part of the complex. The image is located just along the Van Heemstraweg in the heart of the village of Beuningen, in the garden of the old R.K. rectory, on the corner with the Dorpssingel. Here it determines the historical character to a large extent with the Corneliuskerk to its left and the rectory behind it. Also important is the ensemble value of the image, which forms an indispensable part of a pre-war Catholic ensemble.

- Of socio-economic / cultural history value as part of the complex which has played an important role in village life. Sacred Heart images are characteristic of Catholic religious practice from 1900 onwards, in which devotion to the Sacred Heart played a major role both in "the living room" and at the church. These images form an indispensable part of the ensemble of church, churchyard, rectory and rectory garden.

The veneration of the Sacred Heart became popular within the R.K. church in the late 19th century, but this devotion was already practiced in medieval monasteries. Summarized, within this devotion the heart of Jesus, the God-man, is regarded as the symbol of His love. Through prayer, penance and fervent communions, reparation was made to Him for the shame of sin, insofar as this could be brought about by people.

Laypeople were not initially involved in this devotion. Such devotions played a role mainly in the Middle Ages among the contemplative monastic orders. Gradually this would change, which meant that this devotion would also come to play a role in religious popular culture. Through the visions of H. Margareta Maria Alacoque (died 1690) and H. Joannes Eudes (died 1680), the devotion of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary spread at the end of the 17th century among the Catholic subjects. Approval of the office in honour of Jesus's Sacred Heart was only given in Rome in 1765.

In the 19th century this devotion continued. Around the middle of the century in France they began the construction of churches dedicated to the Sacred Heart. In Paris stands the most famous example of a great basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart, the Sacré Coeur (1875 - 1919). The height of the devotion emerged towards the end of the 19th century; Pope Leo XIII dedicated the entire world to the Sacred Heart in 1899. The year 1900 thus became a Jubilee Year through the dedication of the world to the Sacred Heart. In the Netherlands too, Sacred Heart images appeared in large numbers in churches, or in gardens adjoining rectories and churches, while among the faithful small Sacred Heart images were also distributed. In the first half of the 20th century the Sacred Heart image thus assumed a special place in the Catholic living room interior, as a protector of house and inhabitants.
