Inleiding
Reclame-MUURSCHILDERING voor graaf Egbert-sigaren, begin 20ste eeuw.
Hoewel de tabaksteelt tot het derde kwart van de 19de eeuw behoorde tot een van de belangrijkste middelen van bestaan in Gelderland kreeg deze enkele jaren later concurrentie te duchten van buitenlandse tabakssoorten. Dit betekende echter nog niet het einde van de tabaksnijverheid in Culemborg. De muurschildering van tabaksreclame aan de Veerweg is uitgevoerd op een gevel van arbeiderswoningen aan het begin van de Veerweg die vanaf de zuidelijke oever van de Lek het stadscentrum in leidt.
Omschrijving
De muurschildering is aangebracht op de noordwestelijk gelegen blind uitgevoerde eindgevel van een rij woonhuizen aan de Veerweg op de hoek met de Steenovenslaan. Hij beslaat de gevel vanaf de verdiepingsvloer tot in de nok van de puntgevel. De ten tijde van de inventarisatie in slechte staat verkerende schildering toont tegen een fond van geel en wit, ten halve lijve een man, uitgerust in historische kledij met brede kanten kraag en hoed. Voorzien van snor en kinbaardje, prijst hij 'GRAAF EGBERT-SIGAREN' aan dat in witte letters op een dwarsgeplaatste roodbruine ondergrond is te lezen. Onderaan de schildering is, nu nog nauwelijks leesbaar, de tekst 'PROBEER 'T EENS' aangebracht.

Advertising WALL PAINTING for Graaf Egbert cigars, early 20th century.
Although tobacco cultivation was one of the most important means of livelihood in Gelderland until the third quarter of the 19th century, this was followed by competition from foreign tobacco varieties a few years later. However, this did not mean the end of the tobacco industry in Culemborg. The wall painting of tobacco advertising on the Veerweg was executed on a facade of workers' dwellings at the beginning of the Veerweg, which leads from the southern bank of the Lek towards the city centre.
Description
The wall painting is applied to the north-west facing blind end facade of a row of residential buildings on the Veerweg at the corner with the Steenovenslaan. It covers the facade from the floor level upwards to the ridge of the pitched gable. The painting, which was in poor condition at the time of the survey, shows against a background of yellow and white, half-length, a man dressed in historical clothing with a wide lace collar and hat. Sporting a moustache and small beard, he advertises 'GRAAF EGBERT-SIGAREN' which is readable in white letters on a transversely positioned red-brown ground. At the bottom of the painting, now barely legible, the text 'PROBEER 'T EENS' (Try it once) is inscribed.
