Inleiding

Description
Introduction
RAILWAY VIADUCT built between 1876 and 1879 in the railway embankment that closes off the nineteenth-century ring-shaped zone on the west side of Nijmegen's city centre. The viaduct is situated at the corner of the present Joris Ivensplein (formerly Nieuwe Markt) and the Lange Hezelstraat. The viaduct spans this street at the junction with the Voorstadslaan and forms the boundary between the nineteenth-century expansion of the city and the surrounding area with the Nieuwe Haven and later working-class districts such as Biezen and Waterkwartier. The railway embankment was constructed on the orders of the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen for the railway connection with Arnhem which came into being in 1879. The bridge, popularly known as Hezelpoort after the city gate demolished in 1876, was designed in an eclectic style and makes reference to the architecture of medieval city gates. The viaduct dates from the same period as the abutment of the now-replaced railway bridge over the Waal located nearby in the embankment. This abutment (national monument) is related to the viaduct in its castle-like appearance, although there is no genuine stylistic correspondence. The viaduct has been well preserved, it should be noted that recently parts of the upper side of the bridge have been repointed in the original manner.
Description
RAILWAY VIADUCT constructed from a single large horseshoe-arched opening flanked by abutments against which the vegetated slope of the railway embankment abuts at an angle. To the left of the bridge there is in the railway embankment a later-added opening for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The bridge is built up in red brick in English bond. In combination with this, natural stone has been used for the high plinth, and elements such as arch stones, voussoirs, bands and offset courses. The span is formed by a horseshoe-shaped rendered barrel vault, the arch of which is surrounded by roll mouldings and substantial arch stones. The city-gate-like effect is achieved substantially by the projecting, pillar-like rectangular pilasters situated on either side of the opening, which terminate in cantilevered tower-like sections. These towers are fitted with paired narrow loopholes, above which there is an offset course and a rendered elevation with natural stone coping. The bridge has at deck level a slightly projecting natural stone banded course on block-shaped corbels. Above this, between and on either side of the towers, there is a rendered parapet. The parapet is provided with loophole-like openings, arranged in pairs of three, and is finished with a coping. In the abutments there are round cast-iron tie anchors on either side. Three tracks now run across the bridge deck.
Valuation
RAILWAY VIADUCT ('Hezelpoort') from 1879.
-Of architectural historical importance as a fine and intact example of a railway viaduct from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The bridge is significant on account of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design in eclectic style in which both detailing and principal form seek to align with the form of medieval city gates.
-Of urban planning value on account of the location of the bridge in the Arnhem-Nijmegen railway embankment. The viaduct forms the transition between the nineteenth-century urban expansion and the surrounding area with later expansion districts and lies in the sight line from the shopping street Lange Hezelstraat, and is also an important image-defining element at the present Joris Ivensplein.
-Of cultural historical value as a stage in the typological development of railway bridges, as an example of a railway viaduct built up in brick from the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
