Inleiding

Introduction

BURIAL GROUND AULA and -GATES from 1920-1921 designed by architect J.J. Weve (1852-1942) in expressionistic architectural style with rich ornamental brickwork. The aula with the two flanking gates forms the original main entrance to the adjoining general burial ground. The burial ground is situated in the Nijmegen-West district and is wedged between the Graafseweg and the railway line Nijmegen-'s-Hertogenbosch. The aula is located on the Graafseweg.

Description

BURIAL GROUND AULA on an approximately rectangular ground plan, consisting of a high central space with gently sloping gabled roof and two lower service wings with flat roofs on either side. The bitumen gabled roof has its ridge running perpendicular to the front facade and is placed between end gables. The brick FACADES with ash mortar are laid in cross bond with recessed joints. The facades are finished at the top with (project-)moulded decorative bands. The recessed wall openings have a two-brick roll course at the top and a (slip-)sill at the bottom. The sills, neats, cover plates, birth- and closing stones are executed in hardstone.

The FRONT FACADE is symmetrically arranged. A low brick step leads to the entrance in the middle. The entrance consists of a double panel door with three-light fanlight, and is set in a triangularly finished frame with natural stone blocks at the corners. Above the entrance a cross shape is recessed in the brickwork. The gable top of the central building section is finished with a projecting band with natural stone blocks at the corners. This band rests on heavy corner pilasters of the same height as the flanking service wings. The moulded ornament in the gable top consists of an equilateral triangle within a circle. The service wings each have a spare field on the front with a rectangular window containing a three-part frame with star-shaped glazing bars (on the left the glazing bars have been removed).

The SIDE FACADES of the high building section are articulated by pilaster strips. In the recessed wall fields a series of square windows with star-shaped glazing bars arrangement is placed (grouping in both facades: 2/3/2). The right service wing has a staff entrance (panel door and two-part fanlight with star-shaped glazing bars) and a rectangular window with four-light lower sash and a two-part fanlight with star-shaped glazing bars. The left service wing has two casement windows with star-shaped glazing bars. The wrought iron spigot GATES attached to the side facades, each with two hinged leaves, are fixed between pillars with ornamental brickwork.

The high central section of the REAR FACADE is identical to that of the front facade. To the right of this is an entrance in the service wing with double panel door and two-part fanlight with lozenge-shaped glazing bars. The service wing on the left side has two small casement windows, also with lozenge-shaped glazing bars. The SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT consists of an aula in the high building section; a corridor, toilet and small office in the right service wing; two storage sheds in the left service wing. The INTERIOR is executed soberly. The walls of the aula are finished at the top with a Doric frieze with triglyphs and openings in place of metopes.

Valuation

BURIAL GROUND AULA and GATES from 1920-1921.

- Of architectural-historical value as a typologically well-preserved and intact example in interior and exterior of a burial ground aula in expressionistic architectural style with rich ornamental brickwork. The object has some architectural-historical rarity value because of the combination of said building type and -style. The building with flanking gates is of importance for the oeuvre of the then Nijmegen city architect J.J. Weve.

- Of urban planning value as part of a historically developed urban area, in which the object plays a character-defining role because of its location directly on an important approach route to Nijmegen. The building marks the adjoining burial ground.

- Of cultural-historical value as a special expression of a spiritual development, in this case a building at a general burial ground where relatives gather for the committing of the dead to the earth.
