The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

MANSION with original WROUGHT-IRON FENCING around the front garden, located on the south side of the Oranjesingel. The house was built in 1907 to a design by Nijmegen architect W.J. Maurits in a transitional style with influences from rationalism and the circa-1800 style. The building is located on the east side of the Oranjesingel amongst similar mansions and was built at the same time as the adjoining right-hand neighbour.

The back room on the ground floor was later extended in style towards the rear in place of the conservatory, which was consequently removed. However, the conservatory window frame was retained in situ, though extended upwards.

Description

The building is built of brick in stretcher bond on a rectangular footprint and comprises three storeys under a flat roof. The roof has a half-hipped extension at the front, covered with shingles. Some of the windows have external shutters. These wooden shutters, however, roll up into an internal box. The shutters were manufactured by 'N.V. Amsterdamse Jaloezieën Fabriek J.F. Kröner & Zonen'. Unless otherwise stated, the fanlights contain leaded glass with a coloured central ornament.

The asymmetrical front facade contains on the left a slightly curved bay window extending over two storeys. The ground floor contains three coupled windows with sash frames. The middle window is triple-light, with the central pane ending in a slightly taller rising fanlight with a segmental top. The windows have ashlar corner blocks and are supported by a heavy ashlar lintel, executed in the middle as a rooster comb. The wall piers between the windows have rounded corners. The first floor contains three sash windows. The middle and wider window has a segmental fanlight, the two other windows have a semicircular fanlight. There are also ashlar corner blocks here. The wall piers between the windows are executed at the base as double round columns. The corner blocks here have the form of Romanesque cube capitals. Above the bay window is a balcony with brick balustrade on an ashlar base and with ashlar coping plates. The balcony is accessible via a 2-light casement door with a 3-light fanlight with a bent top, supported by a one-and-a-half brick relieving arch. On the left and right a narrow window with fanlight, the latter framed by ashlar. The facade is finished here with a widely projecting wooden box gutter on richly carved consoles. The gutter has a bent form that follows the lines of the underlying fanlight.

The right section of the facade contains a round-arch portico extending over two storeys with an ashlar step. The entrance consists of a wooden panel door with an elliptical multi-light opening. The frame contains wedges at the top, creating an elliptical arch form. Above the door is a three-light fanlight with ashlar upper and lower lintels. The three panes are separated from each other by a brick column. The first floor has a sash window with semicircular fanlight. This window is entirely filled with leaded glass. The second floor contains a slightly projecting frame on consoles, with the upper lintel carved. The frame contains a 2-light casement window and a divided fanlight. The facade has here a semicircular termination with in the brickwork a circular blind opening. The facade is finished with a widely projecting cornice on richly carved consoles.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE ends in a gabled roof, covered with ashlar plates.

The REAR FACADE is less plastic and has different detailing. Here the brickwork contains courses of white facing brick, sometimes executed double with yellow facing brick headers between them. The facade contains on the left a section extending far to the rear with lower storey heights, creating a split-level here. The ground floor contains in this section on the left what is presumably an original extension with a door in the rear facade and in the side facade a window filled with leaded glass. Above the extension in the rear facade an 8-light fanlight. On the right the facade has a window with presumably modified layout with a 2-light casement window and a 4-light fanlight filled with uncoloured cathedral glass. The first and second floors each have a window with 2-light casement window and 4-light fanlight filled with uncoloured cathedral glass. The windows in this section of the facade are supported by a one-and-a-half brick stretcher course. The facade is finished with a profiled moulding on consoles.

On the right the facade contains on the ground floor a large wooden frame with single-light doors and sidelights. In front of the frame a terrace, executed in terrazzo. The first floor has a balcony, accessible via a frame with single-light sash doors with sidelights and fanlights. The second floor has a window with 2-light casement window and a 4-light fanlight filled with uncoloured cathedral glass. This window is supported by a half-brick relieving arch with above it a brick segmental arch. The facade is finished with a profiled moulding.

The INTERIOR is reasonably well preserved and includes, amongst other things, a white marble floor in the entrance and hall. The frames have carved overlay pieces. Two rooms have a fireplace with black marble mantelpiece, one of the rooms has an original brown marble washstand. On the ground floor and first floor the front and back rooms are separated from each other by a wall with sash doors filled with leaded glass. On the first floor with uncoloured cathedral glass and - influenced by Neo-Renaissance - motifs, on the ground floor with rich motifs featuring medallions depicting famous Dutch merchant ships (?). The draught door in the hall has leaded glass with a central ornament depicting a fruit bowl. Leaded glass is found further in the stairlight. The landing of the first floor is lit by a leaded glass window depicting a woman with a fruit bowl and the cornucopia in Art Nouveau style. The - regrettably - anonymous window appears to be restored as part of the figurative work is missing. All the leaded glass shows influences from the workshop 't Prinsenhof in Delft (1891-1951). One of the toilets is still entirely original, including toilet bowl and tiles.

The front garden is enclosed by the original wrought-iron FENCING.

Valuation

Mansion with wrought-iron fencing from 1907 in a transitional style with influences from rationalism and the circa-1800 style to a design by W.J. Maurits.

- Of architectural-historical value as a well and faithfully preserved example of a mansion with ornamentation influenced by rationalism and the circa-1800 style. The building stands out for high-quality aesthetic qualities, such as the advanced use of materials and rich ornamentation. Characteristic is, amongst other things, the rich interior with wood carving and rich leaded glass. There is an ensemble value as part of the development along the Oranjesingel, within which the building belongs to the mansions common around 1900, which together with the older and later types and styles well represent the development of mansion construction.

- Of urban-design value through its location on the Oranjesingel. The thoroughfare still possesses a stock of historic houses in reasonably good condition, which together create an attractive, valuable streetscape.

- Of cultural-historical value as a recognisable element of societal development. The building was constructed as housing for the new and wealthy urban elite, who preferred to settle in substantial mansions along, amongst other things, the newly laid-out rings around the centre of the old city; an urban expansion that became possible with the removal of the fortifications at the end of the 19th century.
