Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SCHOOL BUILDING, named "Lorentzschool", built in 1930 in Expressionist building style to the design of municipal architect W.M. Dudok, image-forming situated at the Van de Sande Bakhuyzenstraat at the end of the sight axis over the Lorentzvijver, on a site surrounded by the Van de Sande Bakhuyzenstraat on the east side, the Lorentzweg on the south side, the Copernicusstraat on the north side and the Kapteijnstraat on the west side.
Description
School building, erected in yellow brick on a plinth of dark brick which is erected to various heights. The building is composed of blocky volumes of different height and size, horizontally closed off whereby the cornices are painted white. The floor plan is constructed from an L-shape around a courtyard at the Lorentzweg, whereby on the south side the narrow volume, which contains among others the corridors from the ground floor projects strongly. On the west side the semicircular, almost blank volume containing the stairwell closes off, with to its left the high rising chimney the east-west oriented section. On the north side an internal courtyard has been created, surrounded by the lower volumes, which contain among others the gymnasium on the west side, a wall on the north side, an extension containing among other things the transformer room and an open shed on the east side. The corridors on the north and east sides are housed in lower volumes and are characterised in the facades by a horizontal strip of windows, on the ground floor interrupted by wall dams with blue tiles, on the upper storey with the columns positioned behind the window strip. The casement windows beside the wall dams were originally positioned set back. The classrooms are situated in two storeys on the south and west sides, where the facades are characterised by horizontal continuous window strips with the yellow tiled columns behind them. Originally all steel windows were painted orange.
The south facade at the courtyard contains in the left corner the entrance to the vestibule under canopy which forms a continuation of the edge above the window strip in the east facade. Over two storeys run the window strips behind which the classrooms. On the right there is a low, semicircular extension (staff room) with glazed facade on a low plinth, projecting from the corner between the east facade of the tall volume and the south facade of a lower volume which contains on the east side long, narrow windows. The east facade at the courtyard contains the window strips of the corridors, one at the height of the ground floor and one under the eaves, so that a blind facade section is created between them. The narrow projecting volume contains an entrance on the west side, flanked by a round brick wall.
The west facade contains the window strips over two storeys behind which the classrooms, in the facade section between a blind projecting facade section on the right side, which also contains windows on the south side, and the semi-circular facade section on the left side. Two narrow windows, set in to either side of a blue tiled wall dam illuminate the basement under the stairwell.
To the left of the chimney access is given to the volume with the gymnasium, from which one could originally also enter the hall.
The continuous window section at the height of the second storey, behind which the blue tiled columns, for lighting of the gymnasium, is situated on the east side. In the middle, on the ground floor, double doors are placed to either side of a blue tiled column. The lower storage room on the north side has a round window in the north facade and a door in the east facade.
The north facade along the internal courtyard contains on the left a door and window series at the height of the ground floor and under the eaves.
The east wall of the extension is blank.
In the interior the hall and the stairwell are of particular significance. In the traffic section there are black-white tiles and the finish of wainscots and small walls with orange and yellow tiles and a border of dark brown tiles, blue and yellow tiled columns, a blue tiled plinth in the hall, the (blue) stair railings, the doors to the classrooms which have either one or three rectangular light openings one above the other.
Valuation
School building "Lorentzschool" is of general importance for its cultural and architectural-historical as well as typological value as a well-preserved example of a primary school in Expressionist building style, with well-preserved interior components, to the design of municipal architect W.M. Dudok from the first half of the twentieth century, image-forming situated at the Van de Sande Bakhuyzenstraat at the end of the sight axis over the Lorentzvijver.
