Inleiding

Introduction

The MORTUARY CHAPEL of the Van Dorth tot Medler family was built in 1865 in the style of neogothic, possibly after a design by P.J.H. Cuypers, who at the same time also built the church and the rectory in Kranenburg.

Description

The single-aisle MORTUARY CHAPEL comprises two bays under a gabled roof with slate in German bond. The chapel is built of red brick, bonded in English bond, and has a cement-rendered plinth finished with a hardstone moulding. The façades are provided with buttresses with chamfered edges and mortared offsets, which are furnished with tuffstone drip mouldings. The chapel has pointed-arch windows with sloping-away day edges, hardstone drip edges and tuffstone tracery with coloured stained glass.

The FRONT FAÇADE is terminated by a spout gable with overhanging shoulder pieces. The top of the spout gavel is covered with lead. Between the buttresses is the entrance section. The entrance section has a pointed-arch surround and otherwise consists of a double wooden door with wrought-iron decorative fittings in a sandstone surround with chamfered edges, which is finished with a lintel on consoles with pear-bead profile. The tympanum above the lintel contains a sculptured sandstone relief with an image of two family coats of arms, held by a lion on the left and a dog on the right. Above the coats of arms is a crown. To the right of the entrance section is a stone set into the brickwork with the year '1865'. The chapel is accessible via two steps. In front of the steps lies a hardstone plate which can be moved aside and then presumably reveals a stair leading to the burial vault. The LEFT SIDE FAÇADE is divided by three buttresses into two bays and is finished at the top by a dentil course and several projecting brickwork edges. On top of the façade is a zinc gutter. The tracery in the two windows is different and shows variously designed fish-bladders and tooth-mouldings.

The RIGHT SIDE FAÇADE is designed in the same manner as the left side façade.

The REAR FAÇADE has between the two buttresses a pointed-arch window of the same type as in the side façades, but with differently designed tracery. The stained-glass window is modern. In the gable top are three narrow, straight-closed windows, of which the central one is provided with a jalousie and the two others are blind. The INTERIOR is well preserved.

Valuation

MORTUARY CHAPEL from 1865.

- Of architectural-historical value as a good and intact example in the style of neogothic with aesthetic qualities in the design such as good proportions and distinctive ornamentation.

- Of townscape value because of its central location in the cemetery. The chapel also has ensemble value as a functional component of the cemetery complex.

- Of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the major role that the Van Dorth tot Medler family played in the development of Kranenburg in general and the Roman Catholic cemetery in particular.
