Inleiding.

Plint in machinale baksteen.

Introduction.

The VILLA "Fort Sint Antonie" was built on the remains of an old bastion, located on the edge of the polder het Bossche Broek, on the eastern side of the Vughterweg. On three sides the villa is surrounded by the waters of the Dommel. The architect H.W. Valk built the building as his own residence and supplied the design in the formal language of Traditionalism, with references to medieval secular architecture, in particular to the fortified dwelling house. The villa, which was built between 1932 and 1934, formed a striking conclusion to the Vughterpoort district. Today "Fort Sint Antonie" has an office function.

Description.

The sub-basement villa has a roughly L-shaped ground plan, on the north side expanded at the location of the living and consultation room. Two-storey under a composite gabled and hipped roof, covered with monk and nun tiles. On the western side a single-storey extension under a gently sloping hipped roof for the garage.

Broad roof dormers in the roof slopes above the western and southern facades. The facades are built in cloister brick with natural stone elements, such as sills, arch springer stones and corbels. The northern facade shows on the left, at the location of the living room a partly submerged extension, on the right an elongated wing. Herein the ground floor, together with the adjoining garage on the west side of the villa, is built under a gently sloping hipped roof. The rooms against the north facade have coupled arched windows with leaded-glass fanlights and wooden internal shutters in pairs. The entrance arrangement consists of a panelled door, set in a segmental arch portals, with an arched fanlight above. To the right of the entrance a basement window with ironwork. The western facade has an entrance arrangement, which provides access to the living room situated at the Dommel. Glazed panelled door, set in a segmental arch portal. The gable end of the southern extension of the villa has at ground floor level a three-light window, identical to that in the west facade. On the upper floor a cross window with projecting arched fanlight and internal shutters. At the height of the attic a small single-pane window.
