Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
RESIDENCE, designed in 1910 on behalf of M. Schute by architect F. van Hoenselaar in Eclectic forms with elements of Neo-Renaissance. The building forms part of the late-19th-century subdivision along one of the two main roads of the Het Zand district, at the location of a square-shaped widening of the street frontage. The Julianaplein forms on its west side a valuable urban design ensemble through the curved facade and the monumental buildings present there.
Description.
Basement semi-detached house on rectangular plan of two storeys with attic storey and facades in facing brickwork under a flat roof with hipped roof on the front. The asymmetrically constructed building has four bays, of which the leftmost is wider than the others and the adjacent bay serves as the entrance. This projects slightly and is crowned with a stepped gable. The two right bays are identical in design to each other. The front facade, provided with a hardstone plinth, is built in machine-made brick, laid in English bond and cut and struck jointed. The brickwork is enlivened by: brick decoration, relieving arches above the windows, stone bands and natural stone capitals and cornicing on the corner and central pilasters. The windows and doors are all arched with segmental arches. The sashes, which differ from each other in type, detailing and dimensions, are straight-topped and have a hardstone lintel at the top. The two right bays have a balcony resting on consoles worked with flowers and provided with ornamental ironwork from the time of construction. The entrance consists of a double wooden panelled door with iron decorative grille and single-paned fanlight. The gutter rests on worked scroll-shaped consoles. The frieze is also provided with ornamentation. The stepped gable of the entrance bay is richly ornamented and provided with corner pieces and an elegant iron cresting. On the capping plates at the base are placed urn-like elements. In the shingle-clad hipped roof, in addition to the stepped gable, two zinc-clad roof dormers have been inserted. These differ slightly in size and detailing.
The rear facade of the building is considerably plainer than the front facade. The attic storey here has four straight-topped windows with a rooster comb at the top. On the ground floor there are more recent lean-to structures at the kitchen and the living rooms.
The interior layout of the building is still largely from the time of construction. The ornamentation and detailing are sober in character. Via a draught lobby one enters the central hallway, clad with marble tiles, which gives access to the secondary rooms. On the left are a reception room with sober stucco ceiling, the staircase and the kitchen at the rear with tiled floor. On the right two large rooms en suite with sandstone fireplaces from the time of construction. The basement is located beneath the kitchen and is vaulted with stone trough vaults. The main staircase has ornamented newels and balusters and is lit by a glass lantern. On the floor above there is again a central hallway, flanked by among others bedrooms.
Evaluation.
The residence is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of socio-economic development, namely the establishment of houses in the first 's-Hertogenbosch urban expansion following the demolition of the fortification walls; it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the residence. The object is of architectural-historical importance due to the mixed form of eclectic and neo-renaissance forms in style and detailing. The building has ensemble value on account of the typological and urban design coherence with the other buildings at Julianaplein. The house is important on account of the architectural integrity of the exterior. It is important on account of the architectural-historical and constructional rarity.
