Inleiding.

Voorliggend object is gerealiseerd in Hollandse Neo-Renaissance stijl.

Introduction.

A TOWNHOUSE located in the Het Zand district at the Julianaplein. The building is prominently situated at a point where the street facade widens into a square-like expansion, with adjoining buildings on the left and right gables. The Het Zand district has been laid out since approximately 1890 in an area between the old city centre and the railway, and takes its name from the necessary raising of the terrain that had been excavated for military inundations. The houses were realized through private initiative and were primarily acquired by affluent residents of Den Bosch. From the Stationsweg, the primary main axis of Het Zand, the wealth of ornamentation of the buildings decreases in a northerly and southerly direction, which corresponds to the original land prices and the social status of the former owners and inhabitants.

The townhouse, built in 1911 on the commission of H.J.P. van Alfen, was designed by the architectural office K.C. Suyling and Son. This office designed in various styles. The present object was realized in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style.

The building underwent, as evidenced by the foundation stone in the front facade, a restoration in 1987 in which the subsiding front facade was newly underpinned.

Description.

The partially cellar ed brick building occupies an L-shaped floor plan and comprises three storeys under a composite roof, consisting of a transverse gabled roof at the front and a flat roof at the rear. The rear roof slope of the gabled roof placed between stepped gables is covered with mortar-jointed barrel tiles. The front roof slope, which also features a roof dormer under an overhanging half-hipped roof, is covered with a non-original bituminous layer. At the roof edge of the front roof slope, corniced, overhanging gutters on corbels. On the rear facade, two-storey and single-storey extensions under a flat roof. The asymmetrical front facade of the building, laid in brick with tooled joints in header bond, comprises three bays plus a bevelled left corner. The two left bays are crowned with a slightly projecting Dordrecht-style facade. Drip mouldings and a frieze with moulded stones provide horizontal articulation. The (pseudo-)relieving arches corbel slightly at the ground floor—as well as in the gable—and rest on sandstone corbel stones. Midway up the second storey, decoratively carved, widening middle and corner pilasters are set up to support the moulded frieze. In the spandrel of the gable a three-lobe motif. The facade is further articulated and enlivened by the frequent use of moulded red brick in pseudo-relieving arches, reveals of facade openings and pilasters; hard stone for the plinth, (drip) sills and the letterbox; sandstone for speckle courses, for setting and closing stones, for corbel stones decorated with portraits and floral work and half-capitals, for facade ornaments, gutter corbels and as coping; furthermore (wrought) iron for various facade anchors and elegant door fittings. Above the moulded facade openings are found basket arches or a round arch. Straight-sided, moulded window frames containing leaded-glass sash windows and a clamp door with moulded strips, all provided with divided fanlights featuring coloured leaded glass. On the third storey an oculus with leaded-glass pivot window and in the gable a cross window with fanlights as mentioned above. The bevelled corner is detailed accordingly.

Rear facade with single-storey conservatory extension surmounted by a balcony and single-storey kitchen extension under a flat roof. Two-storey extension containing a stairwell and modernized bathroom under a flat roof. Various doors and windows with hard stone drip sills, including a three-light window illuminating the stairwell featuring partly coloured leaded glass, a T-shaped sash window, plain double balcony doors and renewed casement windows.

The layout of the floor plan has been preserved. Entrance with vestibule and long corridor leading to the kitchen extension at the rear. On the left side a room-en-suite with an extended conservatory. In the corridor the water closet and the stair to the upper floors, where around the stairwell are situated various (former) living rooms, bedrooms, guest rooms, bathrooms and servant rooms. The attic storey is somewhat reconfigured.

From the rich and well-preserved interior are of particular importance: the vestibule with tile wainscoting, floor with cement tiles in mosaic pattern, richly decorated entrance porch with etched glass, small curved window tracery with facet-cut glass and leaded-glass fanlight; the corridor with a floor as mentioned above; the water closet with chequerboard floor tiles and yellow-and-black wall tiles; the cellar with barrel vault; the kitchen with cupboards featuring small glazing bars, beam and hood; the stairwell with decoratively carved balusters; the conservatory with red tile floors in honeycomb pattern provided with a border of cement tiles, tile wainscoting and a fanlight in coloured leaded glass; furthermore various rooms and spaces with (partly cathedral-glass fitted) panelled doors and moulded skirtings and with largely still original doorknobs and handles, sliding doors, wooden parquet floors, ceilings with stucco work in geometric patterns; marble fireplaces and a fireplace with a decoratively carved wooden mantelpiece and several wall cupboards.
