Inleiding.
Het HEILIG HARTBEELD is gelegen aan een tot plein verbrede hoofdweg van de wijk het Zand. Het beeld is gesitueerd aan de oostelijke zijde van dit rechthoekige plein. Aan het begin van de jaren twintig van 20ste eeuw werd in 's-Hertogenbosch een speciale Heilig Hartstichting opgericht, die als doelstelling had de financiering van een Heilig Hartbeeld in de Bossche binnenstad te organiseren. De stichting wilde het beeld oorspronkelijk plaatsen in het plantsoen aan de Stationsweg. Uiteindelijk werd het beeld geplaatst op het Julianaplein, waar het in 1925 werd onthuld. Het ontwerp werd geleverd door de Bosschenaar Dorus Hermsen (1871-1931), het werd uitgevoerd door beeldhouwer Aloys de Beule. Het bronzen beeld werd gegoten door bronsgieterij Van de Vogel uit Gent. Het vertoont stijlelementen van de Neo-Gotiek, de sokkel is uitgevoerd in een Neo-Barokke vormentaal. In 1939 werd het geheel overgeplaatst naar het Emmaplein.
Omschrijving.
Het beeld heeft een hardstenen, getrapte basis met een onregelmatige plattegrond met afwisselend rechte en afgeronde hoeken. Voor het beeld is deze basis voorzien van een mozaïek met een voorstelling van een vis en een mand met broden en de tekst "God bij ons". Het Heilig Hartbeeld staat op een zandstenen sokkel met driedelige geleding, waarbij het middendeel hoger is opgetrokken dan de flankerende sokkelgedeelten. Aan weerszijden van de sokkel een laag gebogen muurtje, eindigend in twee hoekblokken, waarboven bronzen bloembakken zijn geplaatst. Het bronzen Heilig Hartbeeld volgt de opbouw van de sokkel: boven het hoge middengedeelte het beeld van de zegenende Christus. Aan weerszijden hiervan, geplaatst op de lagere sokkelgedeelten een knielende arbeider met hamer (links) en een knielende vrouw met een kind op haar armen. Op twee hoeken van de sokkel bevinden zich kleine beelden: op de noordwestelijke hoek een beeldje van een vrouwelijke heilige, op de zuidoostelijke hoek een beeld van Benedictus. Op de overige twee hoeken van de sokkel zijn de beelden verwijderd. Op de voorzijde van de sokkel een bronzen tekstband, waarop de tekst: "Caritate/ Perpetua/ Dilexi/ Te/ Ideo/ Attraxi/ Te/ Miserans/ Jer. 31-3". Aan de achterzijde van de sokkel een bronzen reliëf, voorstellende de evangelist Johannes, gezeten op een troon. Aan weerszijden van de getroonde evangelist een tweetal wapenschilden (verwijderd). Hieronder een tekstband: "In het jubeljaar MCMXXV toen Pius XI Paus van Rome was en Arnoldus van Diepen Bisschop van 's-Hertogenbosch werd dit Heilig Hart monument opgericht en op den XIXden juni onthuld".
Waardering.
Het Heilig Hartbeeld is van algemeen belang. Het beeld bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling, namelijk de ontwikkeling van de Heilig Hart-devotie in het Interbellum. Voorts illustreert het de door initiatieven van particuliere religieuze instanties tot stand gekomen aankleding van de openbare ruimte in 's-Hertogenbosch. Het Heilig Hartbeeld bezit kunsthistorische waarde door de bijzondere iconografie en de rijke detaillering en door de plaats die het werk inneemt in het oeuvre van de beeldhouwer Aloys de Beule.

The SACRED HEART STATUE is situated on a main road broadened into a square of the district het Zand. The statue is situated on the eastern side of this rectangular square. At the beginning of the nineteen twenties of the twentieth century a special Sacred Heart Foundation was established in 's-Hertogenbosch, which had as objective the financing of a Sacred Heart statue in the inner city of 's-Hertogenbosch. The foundation wanted to place the statue originally in the plantation at the Stationsweg. Ultimately the statue was placed on the Julianaplein, where it was unveiled in 1925. The design was provided by the 's-Hertogenbosch artist Dorus Hermsen (1871-1931), it was executed by sculptor Aloys de Beule. The bronze statue was cast by the bronze foundry Van de Vogel from Ghent. It displays style elements of the Neo-Gothic, the base is executed in a Neo-Baroque formal language. In 1939 the whole was relocated to the Emmaplein.

The statue has a stone base with stepped forms with an irregular ground plan with alternating straight and rounded corners. In front of the statue this base is provided with a mosaic with a representation of a fish and a basket with loaves and the text "God bij ons". The Sacred Heart statue stands on a sandstone base with three-part articulation, whereby the middle section is drawn up higher than the flanking base sections. On either side of the base a low curved wall, ending in two corner blocks, above which bronze flower boxes are placed. The bronze Sacred Heart statue follows the structure of the base: above the high middle section the statue of the blessing Christ. On either side of this, placed on the lower base sections a kneeling worker with hammer (left) and a kneeling woman with a child in her arms. On two corners of the base are small statues: on the northwestern corner a statuette of a female saint, on the southeastern corner a statue of Benedictus. On the remaining two corners of the base the statues have been removed. On the front of the base a bronze text band, with the text: "Caritate/ Perpetua/ Dilexi/ Te/ Ideo/ Attraxi/ Te/ Miserans/ Jer. 31-3". On the rear of the base a bronze relief, representing the evangelist John, seated on a throne. On either side of the enthroned evangelist two coats of arms (removed). Below this a text band: "In the jubilee year MCMXXV when Pius XI was Pope of Rome and Arnoldus van Diepen was Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch this Sacred Heart monument was erected and unveiled on the XIXth of June".
Valuation.
The Sacred Heart statue is of general interest.
