Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Hertogsgemaal, erected in 1940 according to plans by R. VerLoren van Themaat in the forms of the Delft School. The pumping station served to pump water from both the Hertogswetering and the Hoefgraaf onto the Maas. With the closure of the Beerse spillway in 1942, inundations in the northeastern part of North Brabant came to an end. Water management could now be directed towards maintaining a specific polder level. The two locks in the mouth of the Hertogswetering, the Blauwe Sluis and the Nieuwe Sluis, were not suitable for guaranteeing good water management under all circumstances. To replace the aforementioned locks, an electric pumping station was therefore established in 1941. The pumping station was arranged in such a way that water was extracted from two catchment waters, namely the Hertogswetering and the Hoefgraaf. The pumping station was given the name Hertogsgemaal.
The pumping station building has been fitted out since 1999 as an exhibition space for archaeological finds. The most essential structural and mechanical components of the pumping station have been retained in the process.
Description.
The single-storey pumping station building on a rectangular plan consists of a high section with a gabled roof and a lower extension on the east side with a catslide roof. The roofs are covered with black, newly improved Dutch tiles. The pumps and electric motors are housed in the high section. The transformer room and the operating mechanism for the closure devices are located in the low section. The building is constructed of red brick. The walls are laid in a stretcher bond of three stretches and a header. Narrow masonry buttresses are placed at the corners. The whole is executed in traditional style with arch friezes under the eaves and with renewed four-pane windows with segmental arch. In the southern gable a stone tablet with the name "Hertogsgemaal" and the year "1940" is incorporated above the wide segmentally-arched entrance door. At the corners the entrance is reinforced with concrete blocks.
Beside the entrance is a red sandstone memorial stone for the construction of the pumping station. In the pump cellar there are two electrically-driven vertical Stork centrifugal pumps of different capacity. In the machine room above, two vertical Heemaf electric motors of different power are installed. In deviation from the specification drawing, the electric motor with the greatest power is connected to the pump with the least capacity. The supply of water from the Hertogswetering was, after passing through trash racks, regulated by two hardwood sluice gates of different widths, each of which could close an inlet pipe. The pipes are connected via a hardwood valve.
The water from the Hoefgraaf was conducted to the pumping station through a pipe culvert laid under the Rosmalense dike. The culvert connects to the aforementioned (southern) inlet pipe. At the point of connection a hardwood needle gate was fitted to prevent water from flowing back into the Hoefgraaf.
Both pumps are connected to concrete outlet pipes that opened into a discharge chamber. A partition was fitted in the mouth of the pipes, creating four openings. The discharge chamber was in communication with the Nieuwe Sluis. The six pipes of this lock could be closed by a sluice gate. On the outer front wall, which is still partially visible, the six operating devices for the sluice gates have been preserved. These were manufactured by the N.V. Tilburgsche Machinefabriek and iron foundry, formerly Gebrs. Mercx of Tilburg. The four lifting devices for the gate beams are also present.
After the pumping station was taken out of service in 1979, the discharge chamber was filled in. At the same time the pipe culverts on the Hoefgraaf side were closed with an earth dam.
Valuation.
The Hertogsgemaal is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the history of water management in the northeastern region of North Brabant. The pumping station has architectural-historical value as a representative of the Delft School. The soundness of the building and the two electric motors still present also allow for an industrial-archaeological value. It has ensemble value because of the functional and typological relationship with the other pumping stations and locks at Gewande.
