Omschrijving
Inleiding.
De KWEEKSCHOOL voor onderwijzeressen, behorend bij de Sociëteit van "Mariënburg" van de "Zusters van het Gezelschap Jezus, Maria en Jozef", is gelegen aan de oostelijke zijde van de Sint Janssingel, waar het gebouw aansluit op de zuidelijke zijde van het klooster. Al sinds het einde van de negentiende eeuw was er een kweekschool voor onderwijzeressen in het Mariënburgklooster gehuisvest. Deze onderwijzeressenopleiding trok vooral leerlingen uit de regio rondom 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1925 werd de kweekschool met internaat in een daartoe bestemde nieuwbouw ondergebracht.
Dit schoolgebouw, dat is opgetrokken in een eigentijdse variant van de in het klooster toegepaste neo-Gotische vormentaal, werd ontworpen door architect Ch. Estourgie. De school, die later de Pedagogische Academie huisvestte, heeft inwendig enige wijzigingen in de dispositie en een gedeeltelijke modernisering ondergaan.
Omschrijving.
De kweekschool heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen plus souterrain onder een samengesteld, licht overstekend zadeldak, gedekt met Tuile du Nord-pannen. Boven de voorgevel vijf, boven de achtergevel vier dakkapellen met bolkozijn. Gevels in machinale baksteen, met een hardstenen lijst boven de plint van de voorgevel en zandstenen aanzet- en sluitstenen boven de vensters. De voorgevel, die qua bouwmassa een voortzetting vormt van het neogotische kloostergebouw, heeft twee hoekrisalieten met topgevel. Geheel links heeft de kweekschool een enigszins terugliggend tussenlid met de voormalige hoofdtoegang van de kweekschool. Deze bestaat uit een vleugeldeur met sierroosters en een driedelig bovenlicht. Aan weerszijden van de ingang twee smalle lichten met sierroosters. Omlijsting met reliëfvoorstelling van Jozef, Maria en Jezus in een stralenkrans en tekst "Ora et Labora". Aan weerszijden hiervan twee gestileerde engelenkopjes. Op de begane grond v.l.n.r. een lage toegangsdeur (paneeldeur met sierrooster), waarboven een tweetal lichtvensters, acht brede rondboogvensters met drieruits indeling, kalf en drieruits bovenlichten met glas-in-lood. Op de eerste en tweede verdieping een tiental rechtgesloten vensters, voorzien van kruiskozijnen met vierruits bovenlichten. In de topgevels, ter hoogte van de zolderverdieping, kleinere rechtgesloten vensters met bolkozijn. In de achtergevel is de vensterindeling gelijk aan de voorgevel. Ter hoogte van het souterrain getoogde kelderlichten met diefijzers. Geheel links een terugliggende travee, waarin de toiletblokken zijn voorzien van smalle vensters. Ter hoogte van de tweede verdieping is deze travee voorzien van een loggia met boogvormige openingen met smeedijzeren hekken. Aan de rechterzijde van de achtergevel ter hoogte van de tweede verdieping een balkon. Inwendig heeft de kweekschool op de begane grond een centrale gang parallel aan de voorgevel, met aan weerszijden hiervan lokalen: aan de voorzijde een grote gymnastiekzaal, die is voorzien van een vijftal grote vensters met drie onder- en bovenlichten en achtruits roedenverdeling. Hiertegenover de voormalige refter en recreatiezaal. Links van de centrale gang het trappenhuis, ter plaatse van de overgang tussen gang en trappenhuis een getrapte ontlastingsboog. In het trappenhuis een hardstenen trap, voorzien van smeedijzeren leuning met eikenhouten handvat. In trappenhuis en gang een tegellambrisering, geel met rood-zwarte randen. In de gang een gele tegelvloer met rood-zwarte randen. Op de eerste verdieping aan weerszijden van de centrale gang leslokalen (aan de achterzijde dispositie gewijzigd). Aan de voorzijde, links, een voormalig leermiddelenlokaal, waar de oorspronkelijke houten vloer en houten vitrinekasten nog aanwezig zijn: overige leslokalen gemoderniseerd. In de gang een lichtgrijze tegelvloer met rood-zwarte sierranden. De lokalen hebben nog oorspronkelijke paneeldeuren in de oorspronkelijke kleuren geel-rood. Op de tweede verdieping is de centrale gang gemoderniseerd. Op deze verdieping bevonden zich de chambretten. De zaal met chambretten aan de achterzijde had oorspronkelijk boogvormige doorgangen in de tussenmuren, nu dichtgemetseld. Aan de voorzijde, links, de voormalige tekenzaal, later samengevoegd met kamer boven hoofdtoegang. Op de zolderverdieping, onder de nog oorspronkelijke kap, chambretten. Ook in het souterrain, waar oorspronkelijk de garderobe, opslagruimtes, de verwarmingsruimte en badkamers waren ondergebracht, in de centrale gang een terrazzovloer en een lichtgeel tegellambris met zwart-groene sierranden.
Waardering.
De kweekschool behorend bij het kloostercomplex "Mariënburg" is van algemeen belang. De kweekschool bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling. Het schoolgebouw vormt een illustratie van de ontwikkelingen die zich in het onderwijs rond 1900 voordeden en de belangrijke rol die de katholieke congregaties in 's-Hertogenbosch hebben gespeeld. De kweekschool is voorts van belang vanwege het bouwtype, een bij een klooster behorende kweekschool met internaat. De kweekschool heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de stijl, een versoberde variant van de bij het klooster toegepaste neogotische stijl, vanwege de bijzondere detaillering, met name rondom de voormalige hoofdingang, het trappenhuis en de centrale gangen. Voorts is de kweekschool van belang vanwege de plaats die het schoolgebouw inneemt binnen het oeuvre van architect Ch. Estourgie. De kweekschool is van belang als uitdrukking van een stedenbouwkundige ontwikkeling: het vormt een illustratie van de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling en de schaalvergroting aan de rand van de oorspronkelijke middeleeuwse stad vanaf het einde van de negentiende eeuw. Introduction.
The TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE for female teachers, belonging to the Society of "Mariënburg" of the "Sisters of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph", is located on the eastern side of the Sint Janssingel, where the building adjoins the southern side of the monastery. Since the end of the nineteenth century, a teacher training college for female teachers had been housed in the Mariënburg monastery. This female teacher training programme attracted especially pupils from the region around 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1925 the teacher training college with boarding facility was moved into a newly constructed building designed for this purpose.
This school building, which was erected in a contemporary variant of the Neo-Gothic formal language applied in the monastery, was designed by architect Ch. Estourgie. The school, which later housed the Pedagogical Academy, underwent some internal changes to the layout and partial modernisation.
Description.
The teacher training college has an approximately rectangular floor plan and comprises three storeys plus basement under a composite, slightly projecting gabled roof, covered with Tuile du Nord tiles. Above the front facade five, above the rear facade four roof dormers with bull's-eye windows. Facades in machine-made brick, with a hardstone moulding above the plinth of the front facade and sandstone corner and soffit stones above the windows. The front facade, which in terms of building mass forms a continuation of the Neo-Gothic monastery building, has two corner risalits with gabled tops. Entirely on the left the teacher training college has a somewhat recessed intermediate section with the former main entrance to the teacher training college. This consists of a double door with decorative grilles and a three-part fanlight. On either side of the entrance two narrow lights with decorative grilles. Frame with relief representation of Joseph, Mary and Jesus in a halo of rays and text "Ora et Labora". On either side of this two stylised cherub heads. On the ground floor from left to right a low entrance door (panel door with decorative grille), above which a pair of light windows, eight broad round-arched windows with three-light divisions, calf and three-light fanlights with stained glass. On the first and second floors approximately ten straight-headed windows, provided with cross windows with four-light fanlights. In the gabled tops, at the height of the attic storey, smaller straight-headed windows with bull's-eye windows. In the rear facade the window arrangement is the same as the front facade. At the height of the basement arched cellar lights with iron guards. Entirely on the left a recessed bay, in which the toilet blocks are provided with narrow windows. At the height of the second floor this bay is provided with a loggia with arched openings with wrought-iron railings. On the right side of the rear facade at the height of the second floor a balcony. Internally the teacher training college has on the ground floor a central corridor parallel to the front facade, with rooms on either side: at the front a large gymnasium, which is provided with five large windows with three under- and fanlights and rear three-light glazing bars. Opposite this the former refectory and recreation room. To the left of the central corridor the stairwell, at the point of transition between corridor and stairwell a stepped relieving arch. In the stairwell a hardstone staircase, provided with wrought-iron handrail with oak handrail. In stairwell and corridor tile wainscoting, yellow with red-black borders. In the corridor a yellow tile floor with red-black borders. On the first floor on either side of the central corridor classrooms (rear arrangement altered). At the front, on the left, a former teaching materials room, where the original wooden floor and wooden display cabinets are still present: other classrooms modernised. In the corridor a light grey tile floor with red-black decorative borders. The rooms still have original panel doors in the original colours yellow-red. On the second floor the central corridor has been modernised. On this floor the small bedrooms were located. The hall with small bedrooms at the rear originally had arched passages in the partition walls, now sealed up. At the front, on the left, the former drawing room, later joined with the room above the main entrance. On the attic floor, under the still original roof truss structure, small bedrooms. Also in the basement, where originally the cloakroom, storage spaces, heating room and bathrooms were housed, in the central corridor a terrazzo floor and a light yellow tile wainscoting with black-green decorative borders.

The teacher training college belonging to the "Mariënburg" monastery complex is of general importance. The teacher training college possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a spiritual and socio-economic development. The school building forms an illustration of the developments that occurred in education around 1900 and the important role that Catholic congregations played in 's-Hertogenbosch. The teacher training college is furthermore of importance because of the building type, a teacher training college with boarding facility attached to a monastery. The teacher training college has architectural-historical value because of the style, a sobered variant of the Neo-Gothic style applied at the monastery, because of the distinctive detailing, in particular around the former main entrance, the stairwell and the central corridors. Furthermore, the teacher training college is of importance because of the place the school building occupies within the oeuvre of architect Ch. Estourgie. The teacher training college is of importance as an expression of an urban development: it forms an illustration of spatial development and the increase in scale at the edge of the original medieval city from the end of the nineteenth century onwards. The teacher training college possesses ensemble value because of its distinctive location, connected with the development of the city after the removal of fortification status and because of the importance of the school building for the appearance of the historic city centre. Finally, the teacher training college has been largely well preserved and is thereby a rare example of the Catholic component in the development of the capital city of the diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch.
