Inleiding.

Introduction.

The Franciscan convent "Mariënburg" of the "Sisters of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph" with CHAPEL, is located on the eastern side of the Sint Janssingel. On the southern side the building adjoins the teacher training college (Complex component 2).

The convent is situated on the site of an older convent complex, of which the chapel (extensively renovated in 1929, original construction date 1488) still remains. The present Mariënburg convent was built in 1897-1899, designed by architect J. van Groenendaal. In 1928 the convent was extended with a wing at the rear and a Novitiate and Postulantship, adjoining the north-eastern corner of the main building. This wing initially adjoined a building belonging to the Mariënburg convent (now demolished) on the Uilenburg, by architect S.J. Slootmakers. These extensions were carried out according to the design of architect Ch. Estourgie. The convent was erected in a Neo-Gothic style. The building has been partially modernised internally. In the rear wing the layout was particularly changed on the upper storeys during a renovation in 1979. The former novitiate and postulantship has been extensively modernised internally.

Description.

The convent building consists of the main building with a roughly rectangular plan, with behind it the chapel placed transversely with a T-shaped plan. Adjoining the north-eastern corner of the main building an elongated wing for the Novitiate and Postulantship with an L-shaped plan, which forms a connection between the main building and the Walpoort Chapel. South of the chapel a right wing of the convent with a bent plan. Main building and rear wing have three storeys plus basement under a gabled roof, covered with slate and improved Dutch tiles respectively. The Novitiate and Postulantship has two storeys under a composite hipped roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Above the chapel a tall roof turret, clad with zinc and slate. Facades in brickwork with decorative brick courses. The richly detailed front facade of the main building has three broad risalits (of three window bays), of which the leftmost has a Dordrecht gable, crowned with a natural stone ball, the others with spout gables furnished with arches, crowned with a double stone cross. In the intervening facade sections narrower, less projecting risalits, closed at the top by roof dormers with stepped gables. In the front facade cross windows with six-pane fanlights and below two-pane windows. Above these relieving arches with polychrome brickwork in press-moulded brick in the arch drums. In the projecting central section the main entrance with fixed wooden panel door with wrought iron decorative fittings in a pointed arch portico. In the middle of the soberly executed rear facade of the main building the three-sided closed chapel with on either side of the choir two-storey, flat-topped extensions with rectangular plan for the sacristy and the flower sacristy. In the choir closure pointed arch windows with three lights. In the sacristy sections three-light windows under a segmental arch. In the breastwork of the upper storey window decorative brickwork. Against the rightmost sacristy extension an octagonal staircase turret with spire. In the rear facade to the right of the chapel narrow slit windows. In the roof slopes roof dormers with bulbous windows.

The rear wing of the convent consists of a section with five window bays, placed transversely to the main building, and a section placed obliquely to it, built higher. In the roof slopes broad roof dormers. On the left in the elongated, obliquely placed section a risalit with spout gable. In it the main entrance of the rear wing in a round arch portal, accessible via a brick staircase. At basement level windows with two six-pane windows. On the piano nobile round arch windows with three-part windows and fanlight with small glazing bars. Above these cross windows with small glazing bars. In the stepped gable above three six-pane windows and entirely above a slit window. The same window arrangement in the northern facade and the gable end on the Uilenburg. The gable end has on the far right a bay with four narrow vertical wall recesses, in which narrow single-pane windows. In the northern facade of the rear wing on the left, at the level of the staircase three narrow, step-wise climbing vertical wall recesses with narrow single-pane windows. Two-storey extension under flat roof. The novitiate/postulantship has in the eastern roof slope an elongated roof dormer over almost the entire facade width. The southern facade of the L-shaped building section has two projecting sections: in the middle a building section with three bays in which a higher built central section with stepped gable. On the far right the projecting stepped gable of the eastern wing. This is closed off by a natural stone moulding, crowned with a cross. The novitiate/postulantship is provided with cross windows, on the ground storey with six-pane fanlights, on the first storey with four-pane fanlights. In the eastern wing on the right a set-back facade section with five window bays. At the staircases wall recesses with two narrow vertical ladder windows. On the south-eastern corner of the Novitiate/Postulantship a carved image with image of Mary.

Internally the main building has a central hall with net vaulting on granite columns with foliated capitals. Corridor along the rear facade. Behind this the chapel with basilical structure. Seven bays with stuccoed brick cross-rib vaults. Three-part elevation: arcade with pointed arches, gallery and clerestory. Altar and stained glass windows date from after the Second World War. Also the original colour schemes were changed in the post-war period. In the rear wing a central corridor along the northern facade. In it on the ground floor cross vaults in fair-faced brickwork. Further in the main building and rear wing among others stairs with wrought iron railings and tile wainscotting, various worked panel doors.

Valuation.

The Mariënburg convent is of general importance. The convent possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a spiritual and socio-economic development. The convent forms an illustration of developments in education around 1900 and the important role that Catholic congregations played in this in 's-Hertogenbosch. The convent has architectural-historical value as a particularly fine example of the Neo-Gothic style, characteristic of Catholic convents and boarding schools around 1900. The building furthermore occupies an important place in the oeuvre of architects J. van Groenendaal and Ch. Estourgie. In addition, the convent has architectural-historical value because of the carefully executed neo-Gothic detailing. The Mariënburg convent is important as a particular expression of an urban architectural development: it illustrates the spatial development and increase in scale at the edge of the original Medieval city from the end of the nineteenth century. The Mariënburg convent is important because of its location, linked to the development of the city after the removal of its fortified status and because of the importance of the convent for the appearance of the historic city centre. Finally, the convent has been largely preserved intact and is thereby a rare example of the Catholic component in the capital of the diocese of 's-Hertogenbosch.
