Inleiding
In 1918 vervaardigd en in hetzelfde jaar op de Visbrug geplaatst HERINNERINGSMONUMENT ter nagedachtenis aan de gebroeders Johan en Cornelis de Witt. Het betreft een in brons gegoten sculptuur van twee, naturalistisch weergegeven, figuren in een architectonische omlijsting van zandsteen die van teksten is voorzien. Het bronzen sculptuur is vervaardigd naar een ontwerp van de beeldhouwer Toon Dupuis (1877-1937) en is samengesteld uit een zittende (Johan) en een staande mannenfiguur (Cornelis). De beeldengroep is gegoten door de Delftse gieterij N.V. F.W. Braat. De architectonische omlijsting is naar ontwerp van D. Roosenburg (1887-1962) bij de Steenhouwerij vh Kooy te Den Haag gemaakt. Het monument maakt deel uit van het beschermde stadsgezicht van Dordrecht.
Omschrijving
Het vrijstaande monument bestaat uit een bronzen sculptuur in een symmetrische, architectonische setting van blokken gele zandsteen en granieten trappen aan weerszijden van de sculptuur. Vóór het monument bevindt zich een stoep van zeven met basaltstenen ingevulde en met klinkers omkaderde vakken.
Het bronzen beeld toont de op een zetel zittende figuur van Johan de Witt links, en de tegen deze zetel leunende, staande figuur van Cornelis de Witt rechts. De figuren zijn op naturalistische wijze weergegeven en gekleed in contemporaine kleding. De portretten hebben een min of meer individueel karakter. In de zijranden van de vierkante voetplaat van het beeld zijn de namen van de beeldhouwer Dupuis en de gieterij Braat, alsmede het jaartal 1918 vermeld.
Het beeld staat op een uit blokken gele zandsteen gehouwen piedestal met aan de voorzijde het wapen van de gemeente Dordrecht en de namen Johan en Cornelis de Witt. De figuren worden aan de achterzijde omkaderd door het hoger opgaande middendeel van de setting, dat risaleert ten opzichte van de lagere delen aan weerszijden en hier een overhoekse verbinding mee heeft. Deze vleugels zijn voorzien van hoeklisenen met afgeschuine hoeken, en de tekst van het Hekeldicht uit Palamedes van Joost van den Vondel waarvan de letters zijn uitgevoerd in ingehakte, door middel van goudverf geaccentueerde letters. A COMMEMORATIVE MONUMENT erected in 1918 and placed on the Visbrug in the same year in memory of the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt. It is a bronze-cast sculpture of two, naturalistically rendered, figures in an architectural frame of sandstone inscribed with texts. The bronze sculpture was created after a design by sculptor Toon Dupuis (1877-1937) and consists of a seated figure (Johan) and a standing male figure (Cornelis). Description
The freestanding monument consists of a bronze sculpture in a symmetrical, architectural setting of blocks of yellow sandstone and granite steps on either side of the sculpture. In front of the monument is a pavement of seven compartments filled with basalt stones and edged with clinkers.
The bronze sculpture shows the figure of Johan de Witt seated on a throne on the left, and the figure of Cornelis de Witt leaning against this throne, standing on the right. The figures are rendered in a naturalistic manner and dressed in contemporary clothing. The portraits have a somewhat individual character. On the side edges of the square plinth of the sculpture are inscribed the names of the sculptor Dupuis and the foundry Braat, as well as the year 1918.
The sculpture stands on a pedestal carved from blocks of yellow sandstone with, on the front, the coat of arms of the municipality of Dordrecht and the names Johan and Cornelis de Witt.
