Inleiding
VILLA uit 1895 gebouwd in de stijl van de Neo-Renaissance met Eclectische elementen in opdracht van de heer H.C. Wijers- van Driel, hoofdonderdeel van het villacomplex De Beukenhof.
In 1926 zijn in de rechter zijgevel twee kruiskozijnen geplaatst ter vervanging van een schuifraam en in 1941 zijn in de voor- en linker zijgevel nieuwe dakkapellen geplaatst. Het souterrain had van oorsprong een bijkeuken en een mangelkamer maar werd in de jaren tachtig tot een zelfstandige woonruimte verbouwd waarbij in de zij- en achtergevels nieuwe vensters zijn aangebracht.
Omschrijving
De villa heeft een vierkante plattegrond en boven een gepleisterd souterrain opgetrokken in schone baksteen over twee bouwlagen en een kaplaag. Het pand heeft een afgeknot schilddak bedekt met kruispannen. Het souterrain is gepleisterd waarbij in de bovenste rand schijnvoegen zijn aangebracht. Rondom brede gevellijsten en een geprofileerde gootlijst die aan de voorgevel rust op consoles met triglyfen. De gevels zijn voorzien van geblokte hoeklisenen en geleed door middel van gestucte cordonlijsten, waarvan sommige zijn geprofileerd. In alle gevels zit op de hoek een hardstenen tegel waarin telkens de initialen van één van de kinderen van de eerste bewoners zijn gegraveerd: L.P.A.J.W./ A.A.J.W./J.F.J.W. en H.B.M.W.
De voorgevel (zuidoost) heeft rechts een risaliet bekroond met een topgevel. Tegen de risaliet een erker met in de afgeschuinde zijden drie schuifvensters. Aan weerszijden van de vensters smalle pilasters en bovenlangs een geprofileerd gootlijstje. Op de erker een balkon met een opengewerkte, gestucte balustrade met op de twee voorste hoeken een baluster. Aan het balkon openslaande deuren met zij- en bovenlichten, geplaatst in een gestucte omlijsting met pilasters en kroonlijstje. In de kap van de risaliet een dakkapel met rondboogvormig T-venster met gestucte sluitsteen. Kapelomlijsting met attiek en pilasters met klauwstukken. Op de gevelhoeken van de risaliet en op de dakkapel in totaal vier gestucte pironnen.
Ongeveer in het midden van de voorgevel, in het terugliggende linker geveldeel, bevindt zich de entree met een ingezwenkte, hardstenen bordestrap met hoekbalusters en leuning die op gestucte balusters rust. Langs de hardstenen bordesplaat een gesloten borstwering. Dubbele deur met siersmeedwerk voor de deurlichten en bewerkte gietijzeren handvaten. Glas-in-loodbovenlicht met beschilderd medaillon. Rechts een ingemetselde hardstenen brievenbus. Gietijzeren luifel met glasdakje op geprofileerde zuiltjes met composiet kapitelen. De luifel en zuiltjes zijn afkomstig van G.J. Vincent & Co te Schiedam. Links van de entreepartij een meerruits venster met dubbele ramen, zij- en bovenlichten, geplaatst in een gestucte omlijsting met pilasters en kroonlijstje. Op de verdieping links twee T-vensters met getoogd bovenlicht in een geprofileerde, gestucte omlijsting. Aan de onderzijde een gestuct, liggend paneel. In het voorschild een dakkapel met tweeledig rechtgesloten venster en attiek.
De linker zijgevel (zuid-west) heeft vier T-vensters met glas-in-loodramen en geprofileerde omlijsting. De twee vensters op de begane grond zijn rechtgesloten terwijl die op de verdieping getoogd zijn. Ter plekke van het trappenhuis een groot schuifvenster met glas-in-lood en eveneens met geprofileerde omlijsting. In de kap drie dakkapellen met tweeledig venster en attiek.
De rechter zijgevel (noord-oost) heeft vier vensters en één blind raamvlak. De twee kruiskozijnen op de begane grond zijn voorzien van luiken en hebben glas-in-lood bovenlichten met een beschilderd medaillon. Gestucte raamomlijsting met pilasters en kroonlijstje op consoles.
Alle vensteropeningen in de achtergevel zijn rechtgesloten en hebben aan de bovenzijde gestucte sluit- en hoekstenen. Links een glazen serre met een borstwering van kraalschroten. Ernaast een klein balkon met ijzeren spiltrap naar de tuin. Aan het balkon een dubbele deur met bovenlicht en een ijzeren balkonbalustrade. Op de serre een dakterras waaraan een T-venster met luiken en een glasdeur met bovenlicht naar het achterliggende vertrek. Vlak onder de dakrand nog een tweedelig venster. Langs het dakterras een hekwerk van gedraaide houten balusters.
Rechts een risalerend bouwdeel met afgeknot schilddak waarvan de dakschilden lager doorlopen dan bij de rest van het pand. In deze risaliet op beide bouwlagen een T-venster met luiken.
Het interieur is nog voor een belangrijk deel in originele staat. De plattegrond heeft in het midden een brede gang die naar de veranda leidt, rechts de salon met schuifdeuren. Links een spreekkamer, een keuken en een tuinkamer. Het interieur is min of meer gaaf en voorzien van een aantal bijzondere onderdelen. In de gang en het tochtportaal marmeren vloeren, in de salonkamers stucplafonds met kinderhoofdjes en met stucdecoraties in de hoeken. In de achterste salonkamer een schouw met houtsnijwerk. In de tuinkamer een fraai beschilderd plafond in Art-Nouveau stijl. Meerdere houten en marmeren schouwen. In het toilet geperste reliëftegels. Trappenhuis met glas-in-loodraam, langs de trappen gedraaide houten spijlen.
Waardering
De laat negentiende-eeuwse notabelenwoning Villa Beukenhof is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorisch waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven woonhuis voor de gegoede burgerij in Neo-Renaissancestijl en vanwege de ensemblewaarde met de belendende panden en het nabijgelegen Merwesteijnpark.

VILLA from 1895 built in the style of Neo-Renaissance with Eclectic elements commissioned by Mr H.C. Wijers-van Driel, main component of the villa complex De Beukenhof.

The basement originally had a scullery and a laundry room but was converted in the nineteen-eighties into self-contained living quarters whereby new windows were made in the side and rear gables.
Description
The villa has a square floor plan and is built above a rendered basement in fair-faced brickwork over two storeys and an attic storey. The building has a hipped roof covered with roof tiles. The basement is rendered with mock joints applied to the top edge. All round there are broad facade bands and a moulded cornice which at the front facade rests on consoles with triglyphs. The facades are provided with blocked corner pilasters and articulated by means of stuccoed string-courses, some of which are moulded. In all facades on the corner is a sandstone tile on which the initials of each of the children of the first occupants are engraved: L.P.A.J.W./ A.A.J.W./J.F.J.W. and H.B.M.W.
The front facade (south-east) has on the right a risalit crowned with a gable. Against the risalit a bay with three sash windows in the angled sides. On either side of the windows narrow pilasters and along the top a moulded cornice strip. On the bay a balcony with an open stuccoed balustrade with a baluster on the two front corners. Onto the balcony opening doors with side- and fanlights, placed in a stuccoed frame with pilasters and cornice strip. In the roof of the risalit a roof dormer with semicircular T-window with stuccoed voussoir. Dormer surround with attic and pilasters with corner brackets. On the facade corners of the risalit and on the roof dormer a total of four stuccoed finials.
Approximately in the middle of the front facade, in the recessed left facade section, is the entrance with an angled sandstone front steps with corner balusters and rail resting on stuccoed balusters. Along the sandstone landing slab a closed parapet. Double door with ornamental ironwork for the door lights and worked cast-iron handles. Stained-glass fanlight with painted medallion. On the right an embedded sandstone letterbox. Cast-iron canopy with glass roof on moulded columns with Composite capitals. The canopy and columns come from G.J. Vincent & Co of Schiedam. To the left of the entrance area a multi-pane window with double sashes, side- and fanlights, placed in a stuccoed frame with pilasters and cornice strip. On the upper storey on the left two T-windows with arched fanlight in a moulded, stuccoed frame. Below a stuccoed, horizontal panel. In the front roof slope a roof dormer with two-part straight-headed window and attic.
The left side gable (south-west) has four T-windows with stained-glass sashes and moulded surround. The two windows on the ground floor are straight-headed while those on the upper storey are arched. At the location of the stairwell a large sash window with stained-glass and likewise with moulded surround. In the roof three roof dormers with two-part window and attic.
The right side gable (north-east) has four windows and one blind window frame. The two cross windows on the ground floor are provided with shutters and have stained-glass fanlights with a painted medallion. Stuccoed window surround with pilasters and cornice strip on consoles.
All window openings in the rear gable are straight-headed and have stuccoed voussoirs and corner stones at the top. On the left a glazed conservatory with a parapet of beaded moulding. Next to it a small balcony with an iron spiral stair to the garden. A double door with fanlight and an iron balcony balustrade opens onto the balcony. On the conservatory a roof terrace with a T-window with shutters and a glass door with fanlight to the room behind. Just below the roof edge another two-part window. Along the roof terrace a fence of turned wooden balusters.
On the right a projecting building section with a hipped roof the roof tiles of which extend lower than for the rest of the building. In this risalit on both storeys a T-window with shutters.
The interior is still for a large part in its original state. The floor plan has in the centre a broad corridor which leads to the veranda, on the right the drawing room with sliding doors. On the left a consulting room, a kitchen and a garden room. The interior is more or less intact and provided with a number of special components. In the corridor and the vestibule marble floors, in the drawing rooms stuccoed ceilings with cherub heads and with stucco decorations at the corners. In the back drawing room a fireplace with woodcarving. In the garden room a fine painted ceiling in Art Nouveau style. Several wooden and marble fireplaces. In the lavatory pressed relief tiles. Stairwell with stained-glass window, along the stairs turned wooden spindles.
Valuation
The late nineteenth-century notable residence Villa Beukenhof is of general importance because of its cultural- and architectural-historical value as an intact preserved residence for the well-to-do bourgeoisie in Neo-Renaissance style and because of its ensemble value with the adjoining buildings and the nearby Merwesteijnpark.
