Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Built in the style of TRADITIONALISM in 1896 after a design by architect Van der Schuit of Roermond, a DEVOTIONAL CHAPEL dedicated to St. Anna. Van der Schuit was a drawing instructor at the Teekenschool in Roermond.
The chapel is situated on an axis with the neighbouring castle Walburg. The predecessor of the St. Anna chapel was an old small chapel that had been located in the depths close to the road. In 1896 it was demolished and in its place the new chapel was built. The new St. Anna statue from the studio of dr. P.J.H. Cuypers was placed above the entrance at the consecration of the chapel on 26 July 1896. In the chapel stands a stone altar that was executed after a drawing by the architect of the devotional chapel, Van der Schuit.
Description
The DEVOTIONAL CHAPEL has a rectangular plan with a small apse of three gable surfaces under a gabled roof with slates in scale covering. On the ridge of the rear gable stands a pointed roof turret with wrought-iron cross. The roof is finished with a wooden drip moulding. Below the drip moulding is decorative masonry. The chapel has a brick facade with masonry executed in English bond. The chapel has a total of nine buttresses, all of which are capped with natural stone slabs. The buttresses divide the gable walls into nine gable surfaces. In eight of the gable surfaces are lancet-arched articulated leaded windows with wrought-iron frames. The windows all have a natural stone sill. A band and profile stones accentuate the lancet arch. One gable surface is therefore blind. Against it in the interior the stone altar is placed. The chapel has a projecting plinth around the entire object, which is capped with a natural stone plinth.
The segmental arch-shaped entrance of the chapel is formed by a recessed rectangular double wooden door with wrought-iron decoration. The segmental arch form is accentuated by a band and three layers of profile stones. In the spandrel above the door is stucco work. The name inscription "St. Annakapel" has so far disappeared from the stucco work. In the top gable is placed the St. Anna statue in a lancet-shaped niche. Above the statue is wrought-iron decoration at the ridge. Below the statue in the niche is the date in a foundation stone. The top gable is capped with a natural stone moulding. On the corners of the front gable stands a buttress. Against both buttresses on each side is placed a brick wall with columns and wrought-iron railings. In this way the entrance to the chapel is opened towards the outside. Within these walls are very old trees. The whole thereby achieves a very atmospheric setting.
In the INTERIOR are among other things important the stone altar by the architect of the chapel, Van der Schuit, and the authentic wooden church benches. The marble floor is not authentic, nor is the wooden wainscoting. The marble plinth is authentic. The ceiling has a barrel vault. On the junction line of ceiling and walls is an authentic stucco work moulding.
Valuation
The architectural-historical values of the DEVOTIONAL CHAPEL St. Anna at Laak are determined by the decorative design of the object and the material used. The chapel possesses cultural-historical value as a devotional chapel in a small neighbourhood community. The location of the chapel is remarkable: situated in a rural area, amidst meadows, in the Middle Limburg Maas region. The chapel lies at the edge of a dyke road on an axis with the nearby castle Walburg, which has played a major role in the history of Ohé and Laak and the surrounding area.
Aside from the mentioned ensemble value, the chapel makes a very well-preserved impression. In combination with the location, the chapel moreover has rarity value.
The chapel is of general importance because of the architectural-historical and cultural-historical values, the ensemble value, the high state of preservation and its rarity.
