Inleiding

P.J.H. Cuypers. A.C.

Introduction

A ROMANO-GOTHIC ROMAN CATHOLIC CRUCIFORM BASILICA with SACRISTY built in 1867 according to a design by architect A.C. Bolsius, dedicated to the Birth of Our Lady. A.C. Bolsius was a pupil of Pierre Cuypers and worked as supervisor on the construction of Cuypers' St. Catharina Church in Eindhoven. Bolsius subsequently worked in Limburg between 1867 and 1884. Bolsius also built in Melick (expansion of a Cuypers church) and in Doenrade.

The church is situated in a rural setting at the edge of the Maasplassen. The cruciform basilica with octagonal crossing tower was extended in 1918 by the construction of two chapels, to the left and right of the main entrance. During the Second World War the church suffered severe damage. After the war the church was thoroughly restored in the years 1945-1947 and a number of alterations were made. The wooden spiral staircase, which stood inside the church and provided access to the choir gallery, was removed. Outside the church a small tower was built with a new staircase. The gallery was now accessible from the church portal. The wooden ceiling was replaced by brick vault webbing. The interior walls, formerly painted brick, were now completely plastered. The sacristy was considerably enlarged and connected to the parsonage by a corridor, also located on Kerkstraat. In 1954 the interior of the church was definitively completed. The painter Daan Wildschut provided the apse and triumphal arch with paintings.

The church is bounded on the side of the priest's choir by a walled churchyard. On the churchyard and on a green space at the south gable of the church stand sandstone images of St. Michael and Mary Magdalena Daemen, which together with the church, the parsonage and the Sacred Heart image in the square by the parsonage are protected.

Description

The CHURCH is a cruciform basilica with three aisles, an octagonal crossing tower, two transepts and a choir. The central aisle, the transepts, the church portal as well as the two chapels beside the church portal lie under gabled roofs. The side aisles have sloped roofs. At the north gable the side aisle continues after the transept. The side aisle here comprises a bay with a window and serves as an auxiliary sacristy. At the south gable after the transept the sacristy is attached under a gabled roof to the choir bay. Behind the crossing tower is the choir, consisting of a choir bay the size of a central aisle bay and a half-round apse with half-conical roof. The crossing tower is accessible from the sacristy by means of two interlocking authentic wooden staircases which are placed in a separate tower under conical roofs. All roofs and the tower spire are covered with slate. The gable tops of the roofs are covered by natural stone mouldings with an ornamental stone on top. The church displays a facade in brick in two storeys with masonry in Flemish bond. The materials used are brick and natural stone, while much marble is used in the interior. The gables have pointed arch-shaped and round leaded windows with natural stone lintels and brick sills. The form of the various windows is accentuated by brick bands. The round windows in the crossing tower have a natural stone sill on half, the other half is accentuated by masonry. In the transepts and the front facade of the central aisle are rose windows. Ornamental masonry further below the cornices of the central aisle, transepts and side aisles, as well as on the division of storeys. The entire church is surrounded by a brick plinth.

The FRONT FACADE (west gable) contains two chapels which enclose a portal. The windows of the chapels and the wooden entrance door with wrought iron fittings as well as the niche with a statue of Mary above the entrance of the front portal are accentuated by decorative masonry. The entrance door is accessed via two natural stone steps. In this wall structure spared wall areas and a decorative band of masonry in the middle of the facade planes. Above the chapels and the portal is the front facade of the church with a rose window and bands of ornamental masonry. Against the front facade a small tower to the gallery is built with a staircase. The gallery is thus accessible from the front portal.

The WALL STRUCTURE of the SIDE GABLES is largely identical. Each facade of the CENTRAL AISLE contains three pairs of windows before the transept. The SIDE AISLES are divided by pilasters into three bays each with one window. Across the facades of the side aisles runs below the windows a band of ornamental masonry. This band of ornamental masonry with a window above it continues in the side gables of the chapels which are placed before the front facade. The TRANSEPTS contain three windows in the first storey and a rose window in the second storey in the front facade. In the side gables of the transepts there is always one window in the second storey. On the side of the sacristy the side gable is blank. At the junction of the transepts with the side aisles on each side a recent concrete buttress, which is connected through the walls to the crossing tower. The concrete buttresses are intended to prevent the walls from buckling under pressure from the crossing tower.

On top of the crossing of the various aisles is the octagonal CROSSING TOWER with pilasters around the spire. On the spire a metal cross and a gilded weather vane. In the spire are two clock faces, which are driven by an authentic clockwork in the tower. In the pilasters are alternately a lancet-shaped sound opening with wooden shingles and a concrete plate. Below the pilasters in total eight round leaded windows, which provide light through the cupola. At the rear of the tower two separate towers, which are divided into sections by decorative masonry bands. These towers overlap and in this way bridge the space between the sacristy and the bell tower with clockwork. The towers contain rectangular windows. After the transepts follows the CHOIR consisting of a bay of the central aisle with a window and a half-round apse. The apse has three windows in the second storey and a blind dwarf gallery in the third storey. The storeys are separated by decorative masonry. Where the apse transitions to the sacristy is a square chimney of the heating installation.

The SACRISTY is located under a gabled roof with slate covering. Below the roof edge and across the gable runs a decorative band of masonry. In the rear facade are rectangular wrought iron window frames. Attached to the sacristy is a corridor which connects the church and sacristy with the parsonage. We enter the INTERIOR via the front portal and come out under the wooden gallery which is supported on four wooden columns. Above the organ a large rose window. On each side of the nave four columns which correspond with as many pointed arch vaults. The central aisle has three pairs of windows on each side. The windows are set back in pointed arch-shaped niches. The side aisles are always separated from the central nave by three transverse arches. The crossing tower rests on four columns of double size. Where the columns in the ceiling divide, there are triangles with decorative stucco projections. The crossing tower contains a large dome with eight round windows. These lie in round arch-shaped niches. Pointed arch vaults form the transition to the side chapels in the transepts and the choir. The transepts contain a rose window and three leaded windows in the large wall planes and a window in each side gable. The choir contains two pointed arch vaults which mark the entrance to the altar in the central aisle bay with a window on each side and the tabernacle in the half-round apse. The half-round apse contains three elongated round arch-shaped leaded windows.

INTERIOR VALUES include among others the double wooden doors with wrought iron fittings as entrance to the front portal and the church, the authentic tiled floors of the right chapel at the front gable and the tiled floors of the choir and the apse. Besides the many non-stained windows the church contains in total 21 stained leaded windows by H. Oidtmann, Linnich (Germany). In the apse are three leaded windows from circa 1900, which depict biblical scenes. The remaining eighteen leaded windows by Oidtmann are of later date. Two are dated 1923 and 1925. The windows are located in the priest's choir (2), the left transept (5), the left side aisle (3), the right side aisle (3), the left side chapel (1), the right side chapel (1). In the three rose windows we find busts of St. Cecilia, Madonna, St. Joseph on his deathbed. Of the three stained leaded windows in the right transept the maker is not known.

The church further contains a freestone baptismal font from the late Middle Ages. Recently a copper vaulted lid by Arthur Spronken was added. The confessionals come from the Cuypers workshop in Roermond and are dated to 1870. The tabernacle cabinet is seventeenth-century and of oak. Besides various (polychromed or brown-painted) wooden images from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century in the church. In the spire of the crossing tower is an authentic clockwork from the nineteenth century.

On the green space at the south gable of the church stands a sandstone image by sculptor Van Helden, Waldfeucht (Germany) from 1933. On a stepped pedestal stands an image of Mary Magdalena Daemen, foundress of the order of the Sisters Franciscanessen of Penance and Christian Love.

On the churchyard, which borders the east side of the church, there is also a sandstone image by sculptor Van Helden. This image from 1932 depicts St. Michael, winged with downward-pointing sword in the left hand.

Valuation

The architectural-historical values of the R.C. Church of the Birth of Our Lady in Ohé en Laak are determined in the first place by the importance of the building within the building tradition of the workshop of Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. A.C. Bolsius is a pupil of Cuypers. He expresses himself in his design in a wonderful formal language and strives for a high level of aspiration. The architectural-historical values of the church are further determined by the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and furthermore because of the material use and ornamentation. The church is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of spiritual development: the emancipation of the Roman Catholic faith in the province of Limburg from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The cultural-historical value of the church is moreover determined by the presence of a large number of art-historical treasures. The church has a high degree of architectural-historical integrity of the exterior and interior, also in relation to the visual and structural integrity of the surroundings. This fact also determines the ensemble value of the church.

The church is finally of general importance because of the architectural-historical and cultural-historical values, the ensemble value, the integrity and typological rarity.
