Inleiding
Houten PAKHUIS 'Waal', in 1880 in ambachtelijk-traditionele trant gebouwd ten behoeve van de graanopslag. Het met de lange gevel direct aan de Zaan gelegen pakhuis maakt deel uit van het gevarieerde industriële landschap langs de Zaanoevers waarin voedsel-, olie- en houtindustrie domineerden en het vervoer over water een essentiële vestigingsvoorwaarde was. Het nog steeds als opslagruimte in gebruik zijnde pakhuis 'Waal' is door middel van een tussenlid (uit 1982) verbonden met het ten oosten ervan gelegen pakhuis 'Maas' (Veerdijk 23) en vormt een ensemble met dit pakhuis en pakhuis 'De Schepel' (Veerdijk 22).
Omschrijving
Het pakhuis is op een rechthoekige plattegrond, in geteerde gepotdekselde delen opgetrokken rond een houtskelet onder een met rode oude holle pannen gedekt, aan de landzijde geknikt zadeldak met windveren en ijzeren daklichten. De noordzijde aan de Veerdijk heeft vijf liggende drieruits vensters net als de zuidzijde, aan de Zaan. De westzijde heeft dubbele deuren, op de zolder schuifluiken en een enkel laadluik. De oostzijde is blind.
De inwendige constructie bevat op de begane grond een rij van tien vierkante standvinken. De dwarsbalken dragen de houten verdiepingsvloer. Op de verdieping worden de dwarsbalken gedragen door krommers. Hierboven bevindt zich de zoldervloer.
Waardering
Uit 1875 daterend pakhuis 'Waal' van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische en industrieel-archeologische waarde als kenmerkend en zeldzaam geworden voorbeeld van een laat negentiende-eeuws houten opslaggebouw ten behoeve van de vanouds langs de Zaanoever geconcentreerde olie- en levensmiddelenindustrie, uit de ontwikkelingsfase waarin van wind- op stoomkracht werd overgeschakeld. Het in hoofdvorm en detaillering vrij gaaf bewaarde pakhuis heeft tevens ensemblewaarde wegens de historisch-functionele en ruimtelijke samenhang met de twee naastgelegen pakhuizen en de olie- en graanverwerkende industriegebouwen, die voor transport aan de Zaan waren gebonden.

Wooden WAREHOUSE 'Waal', built in 1880 in artisanal-traditional style for the purpose of grain storage. The warehouse, preserved in reasonably good condition in its principal form and detailing, also has ensemble value due to the historical-functional and spatial relationship with the two adjacent warehouses and the oil and grain processing industrial buildings, which were dependent on the Zaan for transport.
