Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
R.-K. VILLAGE SCHOOL with SCHOOLMASTER'S DWELLING built in 1913 under the direction of architect J. HOGENKAMP from Doesburg on behalf of the church council of the r.-k. parish in Varik. The village school with schoolmaster's dwelling, built in transitional architecture, is located on the southern side of the Grotestraat within the built-up area of Varik. The r.-k. school is situated to the south-east of the r.-k. church `H.H. Petrus en Paulus' with parsonage. The school with two classrooms and six children's toilets served until 1966. Currently the school is in use as a dwelling house.
Description
The facades of the SCHOOL BUILDING with SCHOOLMASTER'S DWELLING with projecting ashlar frame and chamfering, are constructed in brown-red brick in Flemish bond with red facing brick courses at the level of the sills and lintels of the window openings. Red facing brick is also used to emphasise the alternating lintels and the execution of the voussoirs and keystones. The object can be divided into two building components placed against each other. The school building with rectangular floor plan consists of one storey closed off by a flat roof with generous overhang with at the rear facade a low extension with flat roof. In the front facade of the school building there are multiple paired multi-light windows with multi-light casement windows as fanlights. In the rear facade there are narrow window openings at the location of the children's toilets. The schoolmaster's dwelling is located against the west facade of the school building. The official dwelling with rectangular floor plan consists of one storey and an attic closed off by a hipped roof with gabled top and an attached gabled roof covered with slightly curved pantiles. In the facades of the schoolmaster's dwelling there are largely sash windows on either side flanked by shutters. The FRONT FACADE (north facade) consists of on the left the front facade of the school with on the right the projecting facade of the dwelling. The north facade of the school can be divided into two bays that are mirror images of each other. In the left bay there are two pairs of six-light windows with six-light fanlights at the bottom closed off by a brick drip moulding, at the top by a course with red facing brick voussoirs and keystones. Under the drip mouldings runs across the entire width of the facade a brick drip moulding with a grille at the far left and right below the drip moulding. The facade is closed at the left side by a corner stone. The facade ends in a dentil cornice with projecting, moulded gutter on brackets in the middle interrupted by a Flemish spout gable. In the spout gable there is a rectangular natural stone inlay stone with the name `R.K. SCHOOL.' engraved in relief. The inlay stone is enclosed by a course and a horizontal course of red facing brick stretchers. The shoulders and the spout are emphasised by downward projecting brickwork. At the top the entire spout gable is closed off by a natural stone coping with an incomplete, natural stone capping of the shoulders and the spout. At the far left and right on the flat roof there is a square brick chimney stack with red facing brick course with later placed asbestos pipes. The facade of the schoolmaster's dwelling can be divided into two bays and ends at the level of the lintel of the school windows. The windows are flanked by shutters at the top closed off by a segmental arch with corbelled arch ring. In the left side facade of the dwelling there is a sash window with four-light fanlight. In the left bay there is on the left a sash window and on the right the entrance area. The entrance area consists of a panelled door with leaded glass fanlight and side light at the top closed off by a sloping roof covered with slightly curved Dutch pantiles supported by wooden corbel brackets. In the roof panel there is a roof dormer with six-light window under a pitched roof covered with slightly curved pantiles. The right bay projects in relation to the left bay. On the ground floor there is a three-part window consisting of a central broad sash window on either side flanked by a narrow sash window. The bay ends in a gabled top with generous overhang supported by moulded brackets, fitted with wind braces, a moulded soffit and a wooden gable-top ornament. In the gable-top there is a pivot window with cathedral glass in the three-light fanlight. Above the ridge of the attached gabled roof there is a square, brick chimney stack with red facing brick courses.
The blank LEFT SIDE FACADE (east facade) consists on the left of the side facade of a lower original extension closed off with flat roof, with on the right the side facade of the school building. The extension is for the benefit of the corridor with a series of children's toilets. The side facade of the extension has an identical gutter on brackets. In the side facade of the school building there is, at the level of the sills and lintels in the front facade, a red facing brick course across the entire width. Under the generous overhang there is at the far left and right a rainwater collector with downpipe.
The REAR FACADE consists on the left of the rear facade of the dwelling, with on the right the rear facade of the school building. The rear facade of the dwelling consists of a later constructed conservatory with flat roof replacing various extensions with corrugated sheeting. The current conservatory is carefully executed in multi-light windows with multi-light sliding doors, both with multi-light fanlights. The building line and the height of the conservatory are aligned with the low extension of the school building. In the original rear facade of the official dwelling there are two double opening doors at the location of former windows. In the roof panel there is a non-original roof dormer. The rear facade of the school building consists of the facade of the low extension with in it a glass door with fanlight with on the left side five, on the right side four narrow, standing single-light windows. In the facade of the main building, which projects above the extension there are two pairs of two coupled windows for light into the two classrooms. The window openings are closed off at the top by a course.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE is the west facade of the schoolmaster's dwelling, which ends in a gabled top with generous overhang supported by moulded brackets, fitted with moulded wind braces, soffit and gable-top ornament. On the ground floor there are three regularly distributed T-windows with eight-light fanlight filled with cathedral glass. On the upper floor in the gable-top there are two pivot windows with cathedral glass in the three-light fanlight. The INTERIOR is largely preserved in original state with amongst others the classrooms with decorative ceiling fans, children's toilets, terrazzo floors, panelled doors and staircase area.
