Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the banks along the Dutch inland waterways there are still diverse lighting structures, which depending on their location are designated as bank or HARBOUR LIGHT. This harbour light standing on a wholly iron construction at the Hollandsch Diep and on the southern point of the harbour of Strijensas was probably placed around 1870 as a navigation beacon and harbour light, at the place where a "light" had previously stood. The harbour light may have been built either on the orders of the Ministry of Waterstaat or the Ministry of War, because the coast at Strijensas was then part of the Stelling Hollandsch Diep en Volkerak.
Description
The harbour light standing on the southern point (reinforcement dike) of the harbour faced with basalt blocks is wholly constructed of wrought-iron and cast-iron. It consists of a three-section braced substructure with a spiral staircase and a cylindrical lantern with a dome roof. The cast-iron substructure standing on short round legs, tapering upwards, is a construction of stanch-ions, beams and diagonal, curved coupling pieces screwed together. The coupling pieces are provided at the intersections, both on the outside and inside, with rosettes likewise made of cast-iron. Inside the substructure the light dome is accessible by means of a spiral staircase with a triangular landing. The light dome is provided with a projecting round gallery resting on open-worked consoles with an open balustrade with diagonally placed coupling rods between the cast-iron balusters. The light dome has a cylindrical base under a largely windowed lantern, with a rectangular iron entrance portal with door on the rear side. Between the substructure and the dome roof lies a multi-sided, moulded cornice. The iron dome roof is crowned by a sphere. Between the legs of the harbour light stands a later-added small house, constructed of facing brickwork rising from a square plan, under a concrete roof. This small house was intended for the storage of gas bottles and is of subordinate importance for national protection.
