Inleiding

Description
Introduction
LOCK GATE, component of the lock complex in the harbour canal of Strijen which was extended around 1650. In that year the harbour canal was extended to the present Strijensas, where the canal was provided with a sas (lock gate) for the purposes of navigation. The old water barrier was replaced in 1848 by the present lock gate, which is provided with four pairs of lock gates. The lock gates are so-called pointed gates, the highest of which function as flood gates at high water. The double iron drawbridge over the lock chamber, composed of cast and wrought iron, replaced its wooden predecessor in 1908. The lock was restored and extended in 1926 by the architect C.F. Sepmeyer and again restored in 1960. In that latter year the wooden flood gates were also replaced by steel gates.
Description
The hand-operated lock gate is provided with a lock chamber with masoned quay walls of variable height, which depends on the necessary height of the lock gates between them. The quays are topped with granite slabs and the corners of the quay walls are strengthened by granite corner blocks. The stairs and the quay walls on either side of the chamber are partly still provided with steps and coping stones of sandstone. Each of the four sets of lock gates is connected to two steel gear mechanisms which must be operated by hand by means of a wheel or crank. The high flood gates are of sheet steel and stand to the south (Hollands Diep side) of the double drawbridge in the highest part of the straight chamber. To the south of this the corners of the quays are strengthened with granite blocks and two pairs of slots reinforced with natural stone (granite) are provided in the quay walls for the wave boards. Of the two sets of wooden ebb gates located to the north of the bridge (harbour side), the higher ones were renewed in 1980. The lower ones, in contrast to the other lock gates, are oriented towards the land. In the lock chamber stand a sandstone and a bronze memorial plaque with, among other things, the years of construction and restoration of the lock.
Valuation
The lock gate is of general interest because of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.
- The lock has cultural-historical value as a good representative of a type and as a representative link in the development of lock construction.
- The lock has architectural-historical value because of the characteristic design, detailing and material use for the periods of construction.
- The lock has ensemble value because of the great coherence with the double drawbridge and the nearby ferry house and because it is inextricably linked with the location.
- The lock is also of importance because of its recognisability and great degree of integrity.
