Inleiding

Introduction

The TRAM STATION built around 1912 for the Westlandsche Stoomtramweg-Maatschappij (WSM) is a tangible remnant of the WSM, which played an important role in the economic prosperity of the Westland. Under the leadership of D.P. van Ameyden van Duym, the WSM was expanded from 1881 onwards and connected to the railway network, which enabled better sales of horticultural products. Later, the transport of agricultural and horticultural products shifted to road transport and the tram station, as well as the preserved tram bridge, fell into disuse. The station, which is comparable in detailing to the WSM station in Naaldwijk (1907), is built in an Eclectic style with elements from the Chalet style and Art Nouveau. The canopy covering the waiting room leading to the platform has disappeared. The interior is still completely intact with the Art Nouveau waiting room as its showpiece.

Nowadays a tram museum is housed in the station.

Description

On an irregular ground plan, a tram station built in grey brickwork in bond, covered by gabled roofs with red glazed, flat Frisian tiles. The overhanging gabled roofs have wind braces, a tie-rod and an ornamental brace. Along the roof edges wooden gutters on carved consoles. In the chimneys decorative use of yellow facing brick. In the masonry of the facades yellow facing brick decorative bands, red facing brick courses and a glazed bevelled plinth. The windows have worked stone lekdorpels. The most common type of window in the building is a composite window, two- or three-part with six-light fanlights in the fixed frames and sash windows, below an unequal three-light glazing bars.

In the southern front facade with central risalit, on the left double glass doors with fanlight leading to the waiting room, in the risalit a composite window with centrally a window in the place of the now bricked-up door. The threshold is still present. Above the window a tile panel with the name 'Schipluiden'. On the sides of the risalit a three-light standing window. To the right of the risalit double doors under a four-light fanlight.

The eastern facade has a six-light window and a composite window as in the front facade.

The northern rear facade, in the middle slightly projecting, has on the left a glass door with six-light fanlight flanked by two narrow six-light windows. In the middle a cross window with the same glazing bars as in the front facade. On the right a similar window with three lights, but arched.

In the western side facade the same arched window under a four-light attic window.

The interior has in the waiting room a panelling with rich Art Nouveau motifs, a fireplace with stove and tiles, stucco ceiling and seating bench. In the kitchen a panelled fireplace with moulding and consoles, the original kitchen cupboard with glass doors, floor tiles and tiled panelling.

Valuation

The tram station is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a remnant of the historical infrastructure of the Westland and its place in the development of Dutch regional transport, and because of its significance in the socio-economic history of the Westland.

The tram station is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value found in its typology, detailing and rare, well-preserved interior.
