Inleiding
Rooms Katholieke KERK, "Maria Onbevlekt Ontvangen". Gebouwd in 1927 naar ontwerp van Dom. P. Bellot O.S.B in samenwerking met Pierre Cuypers jr. in een expressionistische baksteenstijl. Opdracht hiertoe werd in 1925 door het kerkbestuur gegeven, de nieuwe kerk vervangt de in 1851 gebouwde Waterstaatskerk.
Omschrijving
Bakstenen kerk met een schip onder zadeldak. De drie brede traveeën zijn voorzien van steekkappen. De daken zijn gedekt met rode verbeterde Hollandse pannen, aan de randen zijn ter versiering zwarte dakpannen gelegd. Het koor is driezijdig gesloten en springt op verdiepingshoogte in tot vijfzijdig. Het koor heeft een omlopend schilddak.
In de hoeken tussen koor en achtergevel van het schip zijn éénlaagse blokvormige dienstruimten onder plat dak geplaatst. De voorgevel heeft een verspringende bovenrand met een kanteelachtige afwerking. In het midden van de voorgevel een toren, voorzien van verticale geleding door smalle gleuven. Op de begane grond een openslaande deur met daarboven een topgevel met natuurstenen afdekrand. Tegen drie zijden van de toren zijn stervormige metalen wijzerplaten aangebracht. In het bovenste deel bevinden zich tussen de sleuven verticale galmgaten.
De spits is gedekt met geschulpte daktegels en wordt bekroond door een kruis met haan.
De zijgevel is per travee voorzien van lisenen waartussen rondbogen, daarbinnen een groot samengesteld glas-in-loodraam opgebouwd uit keperboogvormige- en ruitvormige ramen. Het koor heeft smalle glas-in-loodramen met keperbogen. Boven de ramen is in rode en zwarte baksteen een kruispatroon ingemetseld.
In het interieur wordt het brede middenschip overkluisd door brede paraboolbogen. Hierin is een cassettenplafond met donkere eternietplaten geplaatst. De smalle zijbeuken, van het middenschip gescheiden door bogen op achtkantige pijlers, hebben karakteristieke keperbogen.
De wanden zijn uitgevoerd in schoon metselwerk, in het koor zijn met geglazuurde stenen mozaïek banden ingemetseld. De tegelvloer heeft ter plekke van het koor een mozaïek.
Tot de inventaris behoren onder meer een altaar van Bellot. In de wand achter het altaar van Bellot zitten drie ingemetselde tegeltableaus, voorstellende vier evangelisten. Op het middelste tableau staan een druiventros en een korenaar afgebeeld.
In de boogtrommel van het portiek is een hoogreliëf van Onze Lieve Vrouwe aangebracht door M. van Bokhoven-Jonkers te 's-Hertogenbosch.
Waardering
De kerk is van algemeen belang. De kerk is van cultuurhistorisch belang als uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling van het katholicisme in het Interbellum en als voorbeeld van een kerkdorpontwikkeling in de twintigste eeuw. Het gebouw heeft architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de toegepaste stijlementen, de vormgeving en detaillering. Het is een belangrijk werk in het oeuvre van de architecten. Description
Brick church with a nave under a gabled roof. The three broad bays are fitted with flying buttresses. The roofs are covered with red improved Dutch tiles, at the edges black roof tiles are laid for decoration. The choir is closed with three sides and projects at storey height to five sides. The choir has a surrounding hipped roof.
In the corners between the choir and rear facade of the nave are one-storey block-shaped service rooms under a flat roof. The front facade has a recessed upper edge with crenellated finish. In the middle of the front facade a tower, provided with vertical articulation by narrow slits. On the ground floor a double door with above it a gable with natural stone coping. Against three sides of the tower star-shaped metal clock faces are mounted. In the upper part between the slits are vertical sound openings.
The spire is covered with scalloped roof tiles and is crowned with a cross and weathercock.
The side facade is provided per bay with pilasters between which are round arches, within which a large composite stained glass window built up from herringbone arch-shaped and diamond-shaped windows. The choir has narrow stained glass windows with herringbone arches. Above the windows a cross pattern is set in red and black brick.
In the interior the broad central nave is vaulted by broad parabolic arches. A coffered ceiling with dark asbestos cement panels is installed in these. The narrow side aisles, separated from the central nave by arches on octagonal pillars, have characteristic herringbone arches.
The walls are executed in fair-faced brickwork, in the choir glazed stone mosaic bands are set. The tile floor has a mosaic at the location of the choir.
The inventory includes among others an altar by Bellot. In the wall behind the Bellot altar are three embedded tile tableaux, depicting four evangelists. On the middle tableau are depicted a bunch of grapes and an ear of corn.
In the arch soffit of the porch is a high relief of Our Lady installed by M. van Bokhoven-Jonkers in 's-Hertogenbosch.
Valuation
The church is of general importance. The church is of cultural-historical importance as an expression of the development of Catholicism in the Interwar period and as an example of a church village development in the twentieth century. The building has architectural-historical value because of the applied style elements, the design and detailing. It is an important work in the oeuvre of the architects. It has been well preserved and as such is rare.
