Inleiding

Introduction

Villa Waterloo was built around 1865 on behalf of the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen (State Railway Operating Company). The railway line between Zwolle and Deventer was brought into use around that time. The villa was used as a railway drawing office, probably also as an official residence. The building type and building style is typical of railway buildings from that period. Official residences and station buildings are mostly variations on the same theme: a narrow two-storey main volume under a shallow-pitched gabled roof with vertical windows. Striking similarities between the vanished station building of Wijhe and the villa are, besides this main form and window form, the round windows in the gable tops and the cut wind braces.

The villa is a prominent and structuring part of a series of detached villas along the Stationsweg at the edge of Wijhe to the northwest of the railway line. The building passed into the hands of Mr W.L. Baron De Vos van Steenwijk, owner of the estate De Gelder. The house was inhabited until around 1990. In 1995 the heavily dilapidated building was thoroughly restored. The shutters with hourglass motif (estate De Gelder) were removed, as was the chimney. Since then the building has housed various offices.

Description

Plastered villa, consisting of a narrow elongated building volume of two storeys with against both side gables a narrower transverse wing of one storey thus creating a cruciform plan. Main volume and side wings under shallow-pitched, intersecting gabled roofs. The wind braces and roof edges are provided on all sides with decorative carved work. All gable openings have rounded top corners. On the front gable (S) on the ground floor there is a three-sided bay window with doors; above the bay window on the upper floor a three-sided sheltered balcony with ornamental iron railings and balcony doors with glazing bars. In the gable tops of the tall building section a round window. The gable tops of the transverse wings (E and W) have broadly the same gable layout: two four-light windows under fanlight with blinds and in the gable top a double round-arch window. In the west gable there is between the windows an entrance under fanlight. In all side gables furthermore four-light windows as described. The rear gable (N) of the tall section has an entrance and round-arch window; the northern gables of the wings a door and two small window openings.

Interior with original layout, staircase, simple stucco ceilings and a restrained wooden wainscoting.

Valuation

Villa of general architectural, cultural-historical and urban planning importance:

- on account of the originally functional relationship with the railway line

- on account of the building style and detailing, typical of railway buildings around 1870

- on account of the integrity of the exterior and interior

- on account of the situation
