Inleiding.
In de directe nabijheid van de Rijksmonumenten het Wachthuis en het Arsenaal ligt in de haven van Willemstad een in 1871 gebouwd PEILHUIS in Ambachtelijk-traditionele bouwtrant. Het blokvormige bouwsel ligt bij de Waterpoort en is half op de kade, half in de haven gebouwd voor het onderbrengen van een zelfregistrerende peilschaal welke de waterhoogten vastlegde. Bij de renovatie in circa 1960 is de apparatuur verwijderd en een nieuw dak gelegd. Aan de landzijde is het object door een ijzeren hek van de weg afgescheiden.
Omschrijving.
Het hoge blokvormige volume is opgetrokken in staand verband in donkere baksteen en heeft een schilddak met rode verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Rondom loopt een zinken goot op beugels. Het heeft een hoge gebosseerde bakstenen sokkel met afschuining waarboven een vlakke plint ligt, opgetrokken in IJsselsteen en ronde profiellijst. Aan de waterzijde bevinden zich in de sokkel vier ronde openingen. Centraal in het muurwerk van elk van de lange zijden ligt een segmentboogvenster met zesruits schuifraam. In de dwarsgevel aan landzijde ligt boven een ijzeren trap met negen treden de ingang, een dichte paneeldeur met een klopper die is uitgevoerd met floraal motief waarboven een gedeeld licht onder segmentboog. Strekken vormen de segmentbogen en natuursteen is toegepast in de dorpels van ramen en deur. Aan de zeezijde ligt een blinde muur.
Decoratie is toegepast in de ijzeren trap, waarvan iedere trede is voorzien van een hangende geschulpte rand. Verder hangt links van de ingang aan een smeedijzeren arm een rond uithangbord met de naam 't Peilhuys, met zwarte letters in rood en groen gevlamd veld. Inwendig zijn de muren gepleisterd. Er ligt een houten vloer met in het midden een gat naar de waterput voor de metingen. Er is geen apparatuur aanwezig.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een typologische en technische ontwikkeling verbonden met het havenkarakter van de stad. Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de esthetische kwaliteit en typologie, in de vormgeving is door middel van de sokkel met rustica aansluiting gezocht bij de robuuste uitvoering van de haven met omgeving. Het heeft ensemblewaarde wegens de situering bij de Waterpoort in de directe nabijheid van de beide Rijksmonumenten. Het object is in z'n hoofdvorm gaaf bewaard gebleven en is betrekkelijk zeldzaam.

Introduction.
In the immediate vicinity of the National Monuments the Guardhouse and the Arsenal, in the harbour of Willemstad lies a GAUGE HOUSE built in 1871 in a craftsman-traditional building style. The block-shaped structure is located at the Watergate and is built half on the quay, half in the harbour to house a self-recording gauge which recorded water levels. During renovation in approximately 1960 the equipment was removed and a new roof was laid. On the land side the object is separated from the road by an iron fence.
Description.
The tall block-shaped volume is constructed in stretcher bond in dark brick and has a hipped roof with red improved Dutch tiles. Around it runs a zinc gutter on brackets. It has a high rusticated brick socle with chamfering above which lies a flat plinth, constructed in IJssel stone and round moulding. On the water side there are four round openings in the socle. Centrally in the brickwork of each of the long sides lies a segmental arch window with a six-pane sash window. In the gable end wall on the land side above an iron staircase with nine steps lies the entrance, a solid panel door with a knocker executed with floral motif above which a divided light under segmental arch. Arches form the segmental arches and natural stone is used in the sills of windows and door. On the sea side lies a blank wall.
Decoration is applied in the iron staircase, of which each tread is provided with a hanging sculpted edge. Further to the left of the entrance hangs on a wrought-iron arm a round sign with the name 't Peilhuys, with black letters in a red and green flamed field. Internally the walls are plastered. There is a wooden floor with in the middle a hole to the water well for the measurements. There is no equipment present.
Valuation.
The object is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a typological and technical development connected with the harbour character of the city. It has architectural-historical value on account of the aesthetic quality and typology, in the design an attempt has been made through the socle with rustication to align with the robust execution of the harbour and surroundings. It has ensemble value on account of the location at the Watergate in the immediate vicinity of both National Monuments. The object has been preserved intact in its main form and is relatively rare.
