Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang. Description
Introduction.
Within the built-up area of Willemstad, west of the Kerkring, centrally situated on a square-shaped plot, stands the national monument "Princehof" from 1623. West of this building in the south-west corner of the plot, a CANNON-CARRIAGE SHED was built in 1867 in a traditional craftsman-like manner. The building, in contrast to the Princehof, has its ridge direction perpendicular to the Hofstraat. A cornerstone above the entrance gate on the front records the year 1867. Although the shed was built as a storage place for artillery material, soldiers have been housed there since 1870. When in 1926 the significance of Willemstad as a fortified place ended, the shed remained state property until it passed to the municipality in the late sixties. From 1987 to 1998 municipal offices were housed in it. Adaptations for this purpose did not significantly affect the structure of the building. In the front facade, insulated windows were placed behind the wooden gates and internally temporary walls and sanitary facilities were installed.
Description.
The shed, erected on a rectangular floor plan, comprises one storey and attic storey beneath a large gabled roof covered with dark grey Mulden tiles. Both gable ends are bounded by a wide overhang with decoratively scalloped wind braces, crowned with a stepped top. On each side of the roof lie four small attic lights and at the eaves zinc gutters on hooks. Above the cemented base the brickwork is erected in stretcher bond IJssel brick with brickwork patterns in the gable ends.
Stretchers in the segmental and round arches, also brick corbels. Bar iron in the pilasters of the side facades. The gable ends have a flat symmetrical layout, in which a gate with double clamped doors is centrally placed, above which is a semi-circular iron fanlight with radially placed bars. On the rear side lie louvred segmental arched windows on each side of the gate, on the front semi-circular closing windows with clamped doors. Further lies in each gable a small round opening with an iron rosette.
In the ten bay long side facades, pilasters alternate with seven windows and two gates, both of the same type as in the gable ends. From front to back there lie on each side: a blank section, two windows, a double gate, two windows, a double gate, then three windows. All windows are enclosed with a segmental arch, fitted with six-pane vertical sash windows and provided with gratings and clamped segmental shutters. Natural stone is used in the keystones of the segmental arches, left and right above the windows just below the eaves and occasionally also in the sills. The gates have two outward opening clamped doors that extend to the eaves. The hinges are placed in lugs which are fixed in the wall at the top and in the floor at the bottom. The gate in the rear facade has a concrete threshold, that in the front facade a wooden one. The remaining gates have wooden lintels.
Internally, the original space has been preserved intact. Across the width, a wall closes off an eight bay deep space. The two bay deep rear section has, beside the central middle section with void, on each side a room, one with heating facilities and the other with water supply. Here also lies the staircase to the attic which is an undivided space with eight triangular roof trusses.
Valuation.
The object is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a reminder of the military functions within the fortified place Willemstad and because of the typological development of the military storage place. It has architectural-historical value because of its simple yet balanced architecture and robust design. As a type, the cannon-carriage shed is important for the history of defence architecture. It has ensemble value because of its location near the national monument Princehof and as part of the series of valuable buildings connected with the defensive character of the city. The shed has been preserved intact and possesses rarity value.
