Inleiding.

Introduction.

The CHURCH of H. Jozef in Noordhoek is a three-aisle pseudo-basilica in Expressionist style with a small facade tower, executed in 1921 after designs by Dom. Paul Bellot O.S.B., with the collaboration of H.C. van de Leur.

Description.

The church is constructed in various colours of brick and has a tile-covered gabled roof, which originally displayed ornamental motifs in smoked and red improved Dutch tiles. It consists of a nave of five bays with a narrow choir bay and a dwarf bay with a roof turret.

The choir is square and has a lower sacristy with adjoining rooms. The exterior shows greyish-brown brick with ornamental work in red and black. Due to the low walls and the high roof, the building is integrated into the rural village character. The front facade reflects the division of space into a broad nave spanned by parabolic arches with narrow aisles as side aisles. In front of the facade a round-arched portal under a gabled roof, above which a broad five-part basket-weave arched window. In the gable peak the small tower, which has on each side three sound openings and a gabled roof parallel to the nave roof. The side aisles have in each bay narrow two-part windows covered with basket-weave arches. On the left side aisle a baptistery with a three-sided closure. On the high roof around every other bay in total three brick gable peaks with three-part windows. The choir is an almost square building mass with a gabled roof with hipped end and right-angled additions for sacristy and nuns' choir under gabled roofs. Part of the adjoining rooms has a flat roof with balustrade and corner crownings in brick.

Interiorly, the building, according to the architect's ideas, is entirely executed in polychrome exposed brickwork in very rich and playful brick patterns. The nave has parabolic arches above which are basket-weave arches, which carry the flat and bent planes of the wooden roof covering. The trusses in the side aisles are at right angles to the nave. The baptistery has a built masonry pseudo-dome. The choir has a low triumphal arch and on three sides arched recesses, of which those on the left and right sides are provided with an open column arrangement with horizontal moulding. Characteristic is the colourfulness of the partly even glazed brick, which accentuates the parabolic and basket-weave arches and articulates the wall surfaces with bands and cross patterns in amongst others two shades of blue, brown, white and yellow. The ceiling is blue with black ribs. The windows are executed in orange-yellow glass, which on the right side has been replaced by different glass. All this in accordance with Bellot's ideas about a playful church building for a joyful experience of faith in a cheerful atmosphere.

Designed by the architect natural stone high altar with small columns and monograms, lilies and Alpha and Omega. The tabernacle has on the left an elevation with here and there gilt fluted decorations. Above it an image of the church's patron saint. On the left a skillfully built pulpit and a baptismal font in black veined marble. Altar cross from the Utrecht goldsmith Brom.

Valuation.

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the village church in the Interwar period. The building has architectural-historical importance due to its very distinctive style and detailing in brick and is of art-historical importance due to the interior components. The building is moreover of importance as an example par excellence of the work of the architect Bellot, particularly through the composition and the polychrome brick, which especially express his architectural ideas. It has ensemble values due to its particular location, connected with the development of the church village. It is of importance due to its very great architectural and building technical rarity.
