Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Introduction
HOUSE ON THE BERG, 1642-1906, situated west of the basilica, in a north-south direction between the Dominicanenwal and the Oude Markt. At this location in the old inner city of Sittard, there was in the eleventh century a moated and partly walled dwelling of the city lord, certainly. In the second half of the fourteenth century there was a building here with the name 'Huys auf dem Berge'. This house was rebuilt in 1642 by Johan Maes, ducal receiver of the office of Born. This house was occupied in 1843 by the Ursulines. In 1860 the Ursulines realised a boarding house on the south side of the house with a connecting staircase (complex component 5860701), in 1906 they - after demolition of the third storey - heightened the House on the Berg to a design by the Venlo architect Henri Seelen with two storeys plus a loft storey. At the same time the connecting volume with staircase dating from 1860 was also heightened. A heightening of the boarding house did not take place. The 17th-century building section of the House on the Berg was previously protected nationally under number 33710.
Description
The House on the Berg has a basement storey, four STOREYS and a loft storey on a rectangular FLOOR PLAN. The whole is covered by a FLATTENED ROOF TRUSS STRUCTURE with slate in shingle coverage. Five recessed roof dormers on the western roof slope, four on the eastern roof slope and three on the short roof slope on the north side. All roof dormers are provided with a small hipped roof with slate in river pattern and rectangular, vertically divided wooden windows. Gutter tiles.
The House on the Berg is built in brick, laid in English bond. Hard stone sills. Marl (17th-century base structure) and plastered (20th-century superstructure) window surrounds with keystones and likewise speckle courses. Decorative cornices with gutter blocks, mouse-tooth and dentil moulding. Ornamental wall anchors.
The WEST FAÇADE has ten window bays over four storeys, almost entirely provided with segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with vertically divided fanlights and horizontal division of the glass panes. Tarred plinth.
The EAST FAÇADE on the courtyard side has seven bays over four storeys. White-washed first storey with basement windows, including roll courses. In the first and second storey predominantly rectangular wooden cross windows with horizontal division in the glass pane, in the third and fourth storey segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with vertically divided fanlights and horizontal division of the glass panes.
Of the NORTH FAÇADE on the wall side the second, third and fourth storeys are visible, each with three window bays. In the second storey rectangular wooden cross windows with horizontal division in the glass pane, in the third and fourth storey segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with vertically divided fanlights and horizontal division of the glass panes.
The INTERIOR of the House on the Berg has been considerably altered in terms of layout. On each storey there is a central corridor, with offices and classrooms on either side. The storeys differ in level with respect to the surrounding extensions: there is a separate staircase for the loft storey. In the corridor section on the ground floor that forms the connection with the former boarding house on the northwest side, there is the remains of a 17th-century stuccoed ceiling.
Valuation
The House on the Berg is of great cultural-historical value because of its strong historical connection with the city of Sittard and as a particular expression of an administrative and typological development.
The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architect Henri Seelen in the 1906 extension, the aesthetic qualities of the whole, the use of materials and the ornamentation. The House on the Berg is an essential component of the protected townscape of Sittard, has as a residence of the city lord for centuries been very much connected with the development and extension of the city and is of very great importance for the appearance of Sittard.
The House on the Berg possesses a high degree of cultural-historical and typological rarity, as well as a reasonable degree of architectural-historical rarity, all in relation to the particular age of the house. The House on the Berg is moreover of exceptional importance to the city of Sittard and the surrounding region for cultural-historical reasons.
The House on the Berg represents public interest because of the totality of the aforementioned values.
