Inleiding

Description
Introduction
BOARDING SCHOOL of the Ursuline Convent, 1860, in a nineteenth-century traditional style influenced by neo-Gothic.
The boarding school is situated immediately to the west of the H. Hart Basilica on the Oude Markt, perpendicular to and in line with the Huis op de Berg, and thereby forms the southern closure of this House.
Description
The Ursuline boarding school has a basement, three STOREYS and an attic storey on a rectangular FLOOR PLAN in main form. The boarding school also includes the three southern bays in the first and second storey of the Huis op de Berg. These bays are, like the Huis op de Berg, set back on the west side relative to the Ursuline boarding school. The stairwell is situated in this building part. The main volume is covered by a GABLED ROOF with pantiles and has a wrought-iron ridge ornament. Four roof dormers on the front roof slope, each furnished with a vertically-divided rectangular window with horizontal glazing bars. The connecting volume with the Huis op de Berg has a LEAN-TO ROOF.
The Ursuline boarding school has a hardstone plinth and is built in brick, laid in English bond. Furthermore, hardstone, marl, wrought iron and stucco are applied in the facades.
The FRONT FACADE of the boarding school has four axes, separated by pilasters. The symmetry is only broken by the placement of the entrance in the third axis. Moulded hardstone plinth with basement apertures and basement windows, hardstone steps with wrought-iron balustrade. In the third axis of the first storey the double wooden panelled door set in a hardstone frame. Above the door frame a vertically-divided, segmental arch-shaped inward- and outward-opening wooden fanlight and a segmental arch-shaped transom with hardstone springer stones. In the remaining axes of the first storey, as well as in all axes of the second and third storey, segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with horizontal division of the glass panes and vertical division of the fanlight are placed. Segmental arch transoms with hardstone springer stones. Hardstone window sills. Only the windows of the first storey are furnished with leaded glass. Above the central windows of the second storey a stucco frame moulding interrupted by the central pilaster with the inscription "Pensionaat Ursulinen". Cornice with stepwise-laid consoles, which together form a herringbone arch frieze.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE has three window axes, separated by pilasters, is symmetrically arranged and ends in a spout gable. Moulded and tarred plinth with hardstone frame. In the first storey, as well as in the side axes of the second and third storey, three segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with horizontal division of the glass panes and vertical division of the fanlight. The windows of the first storey are furnished with leaded glass. Segmental arch transoms with hardstone springer stones. The central axis has in the second and third storey twofold-coupled, horizontally-divided pointed arch windows. These windows are placed in a pointed arch-shaped marl window frame with column and foil ornaments. Below the windows of the third storey a stepwise recessed stuccoed sill moulding, continuing in the corner pilasters. Rosettes below the corner windows of the third storey. In the top gable two coupled pointed arch-shaped, vertically-divided windows. The saint's statue between the windows has disappeared, the console and the baldachin are still present. Marl cornice.
Set back and in connection with the Huis Op de Berg is situated the connecting volume with the boarding school, which over a height of two storeys has three window axes. In both storeys three segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with horizontal division of the glass panes and vertical division of the fanlight. Segmental arch transoms with hardstone springer stones.
The symmetrical RIGHT SIDE FACADE has three window axes, separated by pilasters, as well as one slightly set-back axis in the connecting volume with the Huis op de Berg. This right side facade is situated on an enclosed courtyard between the boarding school, the basilica sacristy and the western aisle of the basilica.
Moulded, tarred brick plinth with sill moulding. In each storey three segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with horizontal division of the glass panes and vertical division of the fanlight. Segmental arch transoms with hardstone springer stones. The windows of the first and second storey have leaded glass. In the first storey of the connecting axis, placed in a hardstone door frame with keystone and roll moulding, a segmental arch-shaped double wooden panelled door with leaded glass in the fanlight and the upper panels. Above this door two segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with horizontal division of the glass panes and vertical division of the fanlight.
In the INTERIOR the main layout has been largely preserved. On two storeys there is a change in level to the Huis op de Berg. In the interior of the boarding school, of significance are amongst others the basement with the brick barrel vaults; the monumental stairwell over four storeys with elaborated foil ornaments in the stairwell closure of the second storey, ornamented consoles, wooden balusters, columns with composite capitals in the first, second and third storey; in the stairwell, on the ground floor, a black hardstone floor with white marble diamond motifs, partially renewed; the entrance portal with rectangular double wooden panelled doors with fanlight - recently containing leaded glass - with floor tiling and tiling wainscot renewed in the nineteen-thirties; tall, partly double wooden panelled doors in frames, partly with fanlights, recently leaded glass; a segmental arch-shaped, double wooden panelled door with recently leaded glass, fanlight with wooden tracery forms the access to the central corridor of the Huis op de Berg.
Appraisal
The boarding school of the Ursuline Convent is of cultural-historical value and represents general interest as a particular expression of a local-historical, spiritual and typological development. The architectural-historical values of the boarding school are determined by the applied building style, the high-quality aesthetic quality, the material use, the ornamentation and the coherence between the design of the exterior and interior. The Ursuline boarding school is situated within the protected townscape Sittard, and owing to this situation is very closely connected with the development and expansion of the district and town and is of significance for the appearance of Sittard. The boarding school has a high degree of architectural integrity as regards the exterior, and a reasonable degree of integrity as regards the interior. The building is moreover of significance in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the surrounding convent complex and the historic city centre as a whole. Furthermore, the boarding school has high architectural-historical value and in a regional respect a reasonable typological and functional rarity value. The relative age contributes considerably to this.
