The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

The front building of the INTERNAAT Saint Louis was constructed in 1923 according to a design by the architect J. Bennaers, also known in Roosendaal, who combined elements of Rationalism with the building tradition of Catholic institutions. The building replaced a smaller and lower dwelling house in eclectic architectural style and closes off like a massive screen the courtyard of the internaat on the street side. The massive building mass also determines the silhouette of Oudenbosch through its location on the elevated Market. The building was converted into apartments in 1999-2000, with a gallery added on the courtyard side.

Description.

Elongated, three-storey building of 24 bays, constructed of brick with sparing use of natural stone, covered with a hipped roof with improved Dutch tiles. Basement in grey brick above which a facade articulated by pilasters. In the narrow fields between the pilasters sash windows beneath natural stone lintels with a lower light with six panes and fanlights with eight panes. Overhanging drip moulding on consoles above a brick ornamental moulding. Roof dormers with gabled roofs. The front facade is articulated by a risalit encompassing two bays beneath a shallow-pitched gable with climbing frieze, which in turn is flanked by two broader risalits. Both of these have a tall gable and a tripartite division with a broad, three-part middle window spanning three storeys. The main entrance is located in the left risalit, consisting of a finely carved double panelled door with round panes with grilles in ornamental wrought ironwork and a semicircular fanlight with ornamental stained glass. Above this a tile tableau in green tiles with the institution's name. In the gable a round-arched niche containing the image of Aloysius. The side facades are kept simple. The rear facade closes with a shallow, three-storey wing covered with a flat roof and shingles and adjoins the older Aloysius building. This wing has a round-arched passage with natural stone surround and shows the windows of the stairwell. On the west side of this connecting section a facade counting five window axes, on the east side one of nine bays. This courtyard facade corresponds with the front facade, but lacks the pilasters. The gable on the street side is taller, in keeping with the forms of neo-gothic architecture, which on the courtyard side is aligned with the surrounding older buildings. The windows and ornamental brickwork are identical. The location of the entrance is indicated here by a risalit with low gable and pilasters, within which a three-part, partly natural stone window and door section with pilasters, mouldings and a triangular pediment. Here the text is placed: 'Beati immaculati in via' (Psalm 118). Below a three-part entrance with etched windows, above which a three-part stained glass window. In the right-angled rear wing a gate with door leaves with ornamental wrought ironwork infills.

Interiorly, the ground floor and the stairwell have retained their original character. The former dormitories on the upper storeys have, however, been reorganised. The ground floor is accessed by a central corridor, onto which the entrance hall with porter's lodge and the exit on the courtyard side connect. This corridor shifts in the right section towards the rear and connects to a second hall with stairwell. Hall and corridor have a floor with ornamental tiles and a tile dado rail with late Art Nouveau motifs. The panelled doors with glazed lights, the division with the entrance, the pilasters which articulate the corridor and the ceilings are all original. The halls and rooms on the front and rear sides have partly retained the old door sections. Of significance are amongst others a tableau with the Circle of Castile in the porter's lodge, the three-part stained glass window depicting 'Let the children come to me' and four etched windows in the door section on the courtyard side, the glass window with Mary in the left corridor, the oak stairwell on the left side of the corridor, the wooden stairwell in the connecting wing with the Aloysius building and the authentic small bedroom set up here.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of a spiritual, typological and geographical development, namely the establishment of Catholic teaching congregations and the growth of Oudenbosch into an educational centre of national importance; it is of significance for the typological development of internaat buildings; it has architectural-historical importance because of its architecture and ornamentation and as an example of the work of architect Bennaers; it has ensemble values as part of a larger whole, the core of Oudenbosch, which is of national urban planning importance; it has been preserved in good condition; it is rare because of the combination of the aforementioned characteristics.
